The library is often a boring place for many, especially if someone's already read most everything in there. Not that there are many books in the library as it is, yet, Shep sighs as he rests his chin on his palm and reads another chapter in the epic reprint of Elric, written by Michael Moorcock, a writer from long before his time. His wrinkled hand turns another page, reading about this epic warrior whose life seems intertwined with people from other times and places. It seems to make him ponder life now. The mysterious glowing lines outside of town and the town itself and how he got there.
Camp Wilson was started by Shep's great great grandfather when he was just a boy. During the hard times, running from demonic and nightmarish creatures was the norm back then. A group of military explorers lost and without equipment, they were forced to bunker down at haven and oasis in the middle of the arid and dry wasteland. A small underground spring provides water and agriculture for the community. The glowing lines seem to keep the town protected from the monsters and inhuman and possessed souls at bay. To cross them is suicide. The town is home to roughly 400 people and is fairly self sufficient. Not bad for a town that was originally supposed to be a safe camping spot.
Farms and ranches scatter the landscape for twenty miles, along the small river until it meanders into Crenshaw Lake. Where another group had dammed the stream up to conserve the water in case of drought. Crenshaw is a much larger city and has roughly 10,000 people residing in it and a lot more fun. From there, Camp Wilson gets its electricity and many supplies. Crenshaw Lake is also the only outlet to the world outside of the 'lines'.
There is a recent group of kids always interested in Shep's stories and knowledge from times before the town was formed. Shep vaguely remembers what it was like way back then. Having to travel... the death and torment of the landscape and night time back then. Nightmares still plague him. Especially of one creature. Mentally, Shep blocks the memory out and suppresses the image that many times has caused him to embarrassingly wet himself. Ability that Shep has mastered, being able to suppress his mind to certain things. It usually sets him in a bad mood though.
Ret, who most call Rat, is one of the kids who admires Shep. Ret is one of those who wants to travel beyond the 'lines'. Ignoring the fact that many who travel beyond them never returns. Only merchants enter Crenshaw once every few months with some supplies, but otherwise, no one even thinks to go with them, which is what Ret has wanted to do, along with a few others.
Ret enters the library and smiles upon seeing Shep. Before he can get from the front library doors across the room to Shep's table, a leg sticks out and snags one of Ret's feet, causing him to fall face first into the corner of one of the tables. Ret rolls around on the floor, clutching his eye and kicking his legs in pain. "Ahhg," almost as though he may have lost an eye!
"Ha ha! Rat, you puss!" Out steps Hughe, one of the town bullies. A nineteen year old punk fresh out of school and without many friends. His father was one of the unlucky souls to venture beyond the lines when Hughe was only nine years old. Since then, Hughe has been nothing but violent and unrelenting on his peers. Many have tried to gank up on him, but Hughe has always beaten them, somehow. The rage he feels from his father's disappearance fuels it more and the fear of going to find his father only makes that rage stronger. The only boy to ever best Hughe is a young man named Jiinan. A close fight. Hughes brute strength and speed was enough to put Jiinan in the town clinic, but not before Jiinan knocked him out also. That only happened once though.
Hughe has been in and out of the town jail more than Shep can remember anyone else. He expects the kid to be expelled into the wastes by the time the kid reaches 24 years old.
Hughe steps around Ret, kicking him hard in the ribs, causing him to yelp in pain, "Get up ya wuss, I've had worse. You gonna run to Jiinan again, ya Ratface son of a...?"
Almost if on que, Jiinan steps through the library doors. For Jiinan, life's been pretty good for him. A regular kid and loves toying with handguns. For most of his childhood, hed been meek and tended to use words and his natural charisma to get by, yet one day, upon watching the local town bully beating up on many of his friends and underclassmen, he tried to use his charisma to talk a kid named Hughe Fink out of fighting. Hughe, being strong willed, just hauled off to hit him. This is when everyone discovered Jiinan's true reflexes and reaction speed. The ensuing fight had people talking for months. This happened last year. Usually, Jiinan is allowed to carry his father's gun, but not since that fight. Afraid that his son would do something rash, Roland Steppe decided that he would rather not risk that.
Interested in looking up more about handguns in one of the books that Shep pointed out, Jiinan walks through yet another hot day and through town. Eyeballing the candy store, choosing to go against with his better judgment and just get the book and head home. However, upon stepping through the door, he walks into an odd situation. Shep is there. The old man with long flowing peppered gray hair to his shoulders, finger in a book, staring between Hughe and Ret, one of the local kids, who's usually seen hanging around Shep. Ret is lying on the floor clutching his face while Jiinan walks in on Hughe kicking Ret while he's down.
As Jiinan had walked through the doors, Hughe looks at him with a glare, "So you DID show. Ready for round 2 or are you gonna buzz off?"
The librarian is already on the phone. She didn't even try to stop Hughe. It almost seems the standard to call the sheriff instead of confronting Hughe.

OOC: The players mentioned in this post may begin posting. I did not start everyone at the same time because I want this to flow. Wait patiently; you will be brought in one at a time. Also, to all players, I will flush out your backgrounds via posts as we go, so no need to write one up. If you have something you really want in the pregame history of your character, then make a request. I’ll consider it. But remember, that doesn’t mean that I will accept it.
Shep:
With an audible sigh Shep takes his finger out of the book he was reading and gently lets it rest on the table. Not bothering to stand up he says in a strong but quiet voice for his age "Leave it be, Hughe. I'da thought you'd had enough time spent in a jail cell. Walk away before the sheriff gets here and I'll recommend he let you off with just a warning." Shep gives Hughe a no-nonsense stare as if inherently expecting Hughe to obey.
Hughe, surprisingly glares back at Shep, nods agreeing, then looks down at Ret, "Your lucky day, Rat. You’re lucky that the old man has some respect in this town after everything he's done for it."
Shep, once again, has to concentrate to block out painful memories of his past. Loss seems to well up inside of him as he concentrates, putting every ounce of his being into keeping a straight face. The few memories that do flood in are of a night sky, a crescent moon, a beautiful blonde woman, smiling fondly at him and an overwhelming sense of affection for her. Images of blood and people screaming horrible screams.
Shep regains his inner composure. Only to have completely missed Jiinan having walked into the library and Hughe walking towards him to either leave, or start more trouble, unsure which. Shep nods his head as if to say, "You’re doing the right thing, son," causing his hair to wave slightly. He continues to watch as Hughe turns to leave.
Jiinan thinks, 'I had hoped to avoid a fight today, but it may not be that way for me.' Coming up behind Hughe, Jiinan stands still for a moment as Shep intervened saving him from making another move into a new fight that he did not want after the last one. On one hand, he considers that he gave as good as he got, but the memory of the recovery time was not something he cares to repeat. He also is trying to prove that his father will let him carry the gun once more. At first he was angry with his father for taking it from him, but later he knew the choice was right.
As Hughe left Jiinan made motion to help Ret up off the floor. "You okay man?" was the simple question he asked.
Ret hesitates and then accepts Jiinan's hand and wipes tears from his eyes, "I HATE that asshole!" he shouts as he slowly walks off behind some bookshelves to compose himself, leaving Shep and Jiinan alone for a moment.
Sheriff Harper steps through the front door and begins speaking with the librarian. His son, Reggie, has been a fairly good friend to most of the kids in town. Reggie tends to cause his father some strife with the local teenage girls and some younger woman taking a liking to his ruggedly good looks and athletic build. The sheriff then glances back up towards the two and nods while continuing to speak with the librarian, Susan.
Susan is in her late twenties, slim with short brunette hair. She has fair, light skin, and bright blue eyes. For a while, she was very frowned upon by the townsfolk for dating Hughe. It was considered improper for a young woman to date such a young boy at the time (To give an idea, she was 21 and he was 14). Then troubles started with Hughe and his bullying. It's said that only Hughe's mother and Susan truly understand why Hughe does what he does, however, she prefers to avoid him thanks to the scrutiny and torment she underwent from the townsfolk. She is quite beautiful, but her former actions have scarred her as a deviant and many are scared of being associated with that. The sheriff seems to understand her, though. He knows that in a small town, that is difficult to get away from, can easily stereotype people based on past actions and that those same actions can haunt you forever.
Shep watches Hughe walk out the door with concern in his eyes. He's seen bullies before and too many times things go very badly for anyone around them. Most young men outgrow that behavior eventually, but Hughe seems to be getting past the age when he'll outgrow it and into the age when it's going to get him into serious trouble. "Jiinan, I applaud your bravery in being willing to stand up to him again, son, but you best watch yer back. He's not the type to take kindly to being beaten again. He may not fight fair next time and if he gets a beating twice, well... after that, he may not let you know you're in a fight before the fights over."
Jiinan walks over to the old man, and looks him in the eyes. "Thanks for handling that Shep. Now what does the studies of the day bring?" He notices the wise eyes of the old man, years of knowledge and experience behind those eyes.
With a familiar friendly smile Shep gently turns the book towards Jiinan so he can see the front cover. Its worn red leather jacket has a cup ring stain in the middle of it and in fading gold lettering it reads, "Elric of Melniboné" and peering closely at the smaller type at the bottom of the cover Jiinan can just barely make out, "Michael Moorcock". Smiling up at Jiinan Shep says with a bit of flair, as if reading a sales pitch, "An immersive work of fiction. Heroes and villains, sorcery, deception and betrayal; a good book if you're interested. I should be done with it soon."
Jiinan thinks about what Shep is reading, and thinks, oO(in many ways life here can be like a story book at times.)Oo One day some of them would have to try and venture beyond the mystical borders that protect their town. Jiinan has a wanderer's soul and wants to see what the rest of the world holds. "Do you think it's more than a grand story now?"
"The book? It's a grand story, but nothing more. A work of fiction and fabrication from an era gone and past...a safer era..." I haunted look crosses Sheps face and he momentarily closes his eyes while he waits for the memories to pass. He continues in a subdued voice as if the ghosts of his past are still dancing before his eyes; head bending its way downward as he speaks. "In our world, the monsters exist. Outside this valley... no... I won't talk about that..." Looking up, Shep says, "We should probably go check on Ret, make sure he's not coughing up blood or something."
Jiinan nods to Shep. "Yes, let’s go check on him. I'm sure he may be fine physically, but mentally I'm wondering as Hughe is taking his toll on everybody's patience. One day he might not get so lucky with his fist, or he may challenge the wrong person." Jiinan begins to stride back to where Ret had taken a moment's refuge. He wants to be certain the boy is fine after all.
The wooden arms of his chair creek as Shep use them to leverage himself up. oO'Definitely not as young as I used to be,'Oo he thinks to himself as he follows Jiinan in search of Ret's hiding place. The smell of the books is a comfort to him as he walks between the shelves. Reading is one of the few enjoyments he has in life. Through books he can temporarily escape the fears and worries of the real world.
As they round the corner of the first row of bookshelves, Ret is looking at a book about self-defense, muttering, "What a load of crap. It doesn't help you if you get hit from behind." He jumps at the sight of Shep and Jiinan coming around the corner. "Why didn't you whoop his ass, Ji?"
Before Jiinan or Shep can answer, the familiar voice of Sheriff Harper chimes in, "Because he did the right thing. I'll be having a word with Hughe before the day is done." The sheriff's fair features seem kind and gentle as he smiles, "Anyways, Jiinan, Ret, you both are invited tonight to come with me, Reggie and the boys if you want." He glances at Shep also, "You too, Shep! The boys seem to like having you around." He grins, "The best part is, I’m taking the grill to cook as we catch. I know how you like that. You guys interested?"
At that moment, the trio notices Nova, Kar and Corvus enter the library who immediately focus their attention on Susan. Susan still looks deeply upset. Kar doesn't seem to notice anything but Susan, but the other two glance back and seem to acknowledge Ret, Shep and Jiinan.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
Meanwhile,
Life's been interesting not ever meeting your parents. Sometime, Corvus can remember a smiling couple playing with him or showing him how to shoot a gun, but it almost seems like a dream, since he never dreams. Not that he can remember. Life at the Powell orphanage is interesting.
Kar, Corvus and a few others still stay there, since their parents were killed 13 years ago. Not that Kar ever needed to stay there, he was almost ready to live on his own at the time, but the death of his parents had a significant impact on his future goals. He still somewhat lives in those days. Kar, being the same age as the librarian, Susan, has always had a crush on her, especially when Susan was desperate enough to date Hughe, the town bully. But it seems that Kar doesn't mind. There’s something weird about that boy.
Corvus continues walking with Nova and Kar, on the way to the library. Apparently, Hughe and Susan just got into a fight or Hughe was fighting with someone. They overheard the phone call to the Sheriff's office. Kar was immediately worried. oO(Meh, something to do)Oo Corvus has always craved some form of adventure in his life. He usually finds himself trying to hang out with Reggie and Ryan, or following Kar whenever Kar finds out that Susan has had problems with Hughe.
oO(I could take that ass in a fair fight)Oo Corvus smiles. oO(If Jiinan can take him, I can.)Oo Corvus is fast and strong, no one denies it, but he remembers being hit from behind and hard, when Hughe jumped the entire group over a remark at the farmer's festival. It took Jiinan to knock Hughe away from everyone to stop him killing Kar, Ryan and Reggie, trying to stomp on their heads. The fight was long and bloody before the sheriff and his deputies, dove in and got em both out of there. Corvus was knocked out first hit. He only caught glimpses of the fight in his daze. A lot of kids and young adults ended up in the clinic that day. Hughe spent a few weeks in jail. oO(Seems no one knows how to fight fair anymore)Oo he glances over at Kar, "So, what are we going to do?" brushing his light hair out of his bright purple hazed eyes.
"Nothing, Sheriff's already on it." Kar shrugs, noticing a wave of regret from Corvus. Why regret? It could be the loss of his parents. He knows somewhat what'd happened to them, but nothing detailed. The Sheriff's horse is roped up outside of the library. Life has been rough for Kar, being somewhat of a kindred spirit with Corvus, both lost their parents around the same time. Taking Corvus under his wing makes him feel better about having no motivation to do anything with him. Kar loves Susan, the beautiful, raven haired Susan. She loves Hughe, she often feels a longing to help Hughe, but everyone lost someone that night. What's so special about Hughe? She believes that she can save Hughe from the monster he has become. oO(If it will make her happy, I guess I could live with that, but if I could change her mind)Oo
Nova walks with the boys, always wondering why she barely gets noticed. She smiles as she watches Corvus, only his elder by a few months. His purple eyes are hypnotic, yet he seems so interested in what's going to happen next in his own life to notice anyone else’s. She has her raven hair back in a pony tail, allowing her dark green eyes to be a little more noticeable. She is rather pretty. Not quite as pretty as Irina and
Susan, but she couldn't possibly be undesirable. Why will no one notice? All these years spending time with the orphaned kids, getting close to them, she expected that she'd get more than a kiss. But the only one who ever kissed her, is Mazur... How did she ever let the little man convince her to kiss her? He's so... ewww! He can be a creep, just like Irina.
Nova sometimes misses her friends from Crenshaw Lake, before her family took over the orphanage. Sometimes, she gets to see them on trips to Crenshaw for supplies when the interline merchants come and trade in Crenshaw. Adrian and Mariam have always been better friends at times. If only the folks here would actually accept her as she is.
Upon stepping through the wooden library doors, they spot the Sheriff talking with Jiinan, Shep and Ret. Ret looks a bit worn. Susan has tears in her eyes as she looks startled upon seeing Kar, Corvus and Nova. "How did you guys..?"
"What happened?" Kar asks interrupting her.
Corvus notices that Shep and the others notice them walk in. Nothing out of the ordinary other than Ret looks a bit beat up. Nova has always like hanging out with Shep; he used to read her stories at night when she would help out at the orphanage. Always a kind man sometimes would lose himself in deep, disturbed thought when reading about the land beyond the lines.
"Hughe was trying to beat up Ret. I think it was because Ret was talking trash about his father the other day when they got into an argument. Hughe is getting out of control!" She hides her face to try and hide the tears.
"He is always out of control, you act like its a huge surprise." Corvus says, glancing over at Susan. "So are your tears for Ret or Hughe?" Having that smart ass expression cross his face before looking back at Kar, "What he needs is a good ass kicking, wouldn't you agree?" oO(I'd like the be the one to give it to him. I owe that bastard one after all)Oo Forming a fist with right hand, yet trying not to be obvious about it.
"Yes Hughe does seem to be getting worse though if Ret was talking trash; it gave Hughe something to act on. oO I wonder what it is that makes Hughe act out so violently. He likes to be the bully but there has to be something else Oo, "Susan is there anything I can do for you? I hate seeing you upset about Hughe." Kar explains.
"A fine idea, Sheriff Harper." Shep responds familiarly to the Sheriff. "I think we could all use a little fun and distraction. I'll bring some vegetables to roast up while awaiting the catch of the mighty fisherman." Shep words show no sarcasm or mockery but rather confidence that the boys will catch many fish.
As the others enter and Shep overhears their banter he is concerned about the anger that Hughe seems to generate in his wake. Shep considers something that the others may be blind to. Where others assume that Hughe is just a bad person, Shep realizes that he wasn't always that way. Life has been difficult for everyone these past 13 years and everyone has handled those losses differently. "Sheriff Harper, might I suggest inviting a few others to the barbecue?" He glances to the group that just entered. "Relaxing by the beach might go a long way towards easing tensions around here. Everyone seems so on edge lately."
Sheriff Harper nods and talks loud enough for the four at the front of the library to hear, "Hey, Susan, Corvus and crew, you guys up for some fishing and barbeque in about thirty minutes? I’m sure that you guys could use the relaxation after these last few months."
Ret grins as he looks to Jiinan and Shep, "Contest to see who catches the biggest one?"
The Sheriff smiles, "Sure thing, Ret. I have some things and a bully that I need to speak with before we go, so get your stuff together and meet at my place. I’m sure that Reggie, Ryan and Jack will appreciate the company after today. I think I was a bit harsh on the boys after they were victimized by another Rina and Beth prank."
Shep rarely sees Irina; usually she seems to leave after a few minutes around him with a strange look about her. Strange girl. Poor thing lost her parents out in the wastes. Shep would like to remember, but... oO(no, I can't)Oo comes the uncontrollable thought in his mind.
Meanwhile, at the front of the library, Susan looks to Kar, Nova and Corvus. "I umm, I could meet you guys out there once the library is closed up. I could use some thinking time." She smiles through her tears at Kar. An affectionate smile that seems to warm Kar and make the trouble worthwhile, he can tell intuitively that she truly cares for him. There is still that mixed feeling in her, but a strong sense of courage.
The sheriff begins to leave and walks past Susan and support group. He nods to Corvus in particular, "You think you can catch the biggest one again? Eight pounder last time, was it?"
Corvus remembers that it was only six and a half pounds, but the sheriff always seems to exaggerate it for him. Maybe in a year it will be eighteen pounds. Rainbow trout are really tasty when fried with vegetables and he could have sworn he just heard Shep announce that he was bringing some fresh vegetables.
Nova catches a glimpse of Hughe across the street, sitting on one of the wooden road rails, staring at the library in deep thought. For once, he seems to look worried.
Jiinan looked at everyone and nods his agreement that fishing will be a good idea. "Lets go have some fun and a lazy afternoon, after all we've been through it might be good to relax." he says. Jiinan's thoughts turn inward on himself, 'If Hughe shows up he better play nice.' Jiinan has grown tired of all his crap and issues. No one has an easy life and it wasn't the fault of anyone else other than his fathers for his actions.
"Sheriff, I don't think its going to be much of a competition." Corvus gives the Sheriff smile. "But I do believe the fish that I caught last time was only about 6 and a half lbs, Sheriff." oO( Maybe this will give me a chance to ask the Sheriff what he remembers or the opertunity to get even with Hughe.)Oo Turning to the rest of the group. "So we going or what? Or we all going to stand around here like trees and grow roots?" Just can't help being a smartass.
"I'm glad your ok if you need anything you just have to ask.". oO glad to see Susan able to at least smile a bit through this OO. "Ok we will be looking forward to seeing you a bit later. I need to find some small exploding things for my fishing and to keep them in line.". Kar looks over at his group of friends as he says it. "So do we need to bring anything else other than ourselves and our choice of equipment?"
"I don't think that blowing up the water would be very sporting, we all want to catch fish, not just one person. Otherwise, you can bring whatever," With that, the Sheriff grins and pats Corvus on the shoulder, "See you guys there," and walks out of the library.
"You've got a deal Ret. Loser washes the dishes." Shep smiles at Ret, glad to see he's no worse for wear. "I'll see you down there in a bit. Just have to go dig some stuff up out of my garden." Shep gives Ret a friendly pat on the shoulder as he turns to retrieve the book he was reading.
"Shannon, dear, can you put this book down in your log for me?" Shep calls to the librarian as he holds up the book with the worn red cover. Susan frowns as she nods. Obviously confused with Shep as he screws her name up again.
He then departs, heading back to his house. The road is dusty and his mind wanders as he walks. Rather than let it wander too far he ponders the book he was reading. Arriving home, Shep gathers whatever ripe vegetables he can find in his garden. Cleaning them he puts them all into a burlap sack which he places into his small hand drawn wagon along with a couple pots and his large frying pan. After considering for a second he also throws in his smaller frying pan before rounding up his fishing gear. Grabbing the handle of the wagon Shep begins to pull it back along the road. It took him awhile, so everyone else may have already headed for the fishing, but he stops at the sheriff's house first to see if the others are there.
Kar can sense the annoyance from Susan, not just from her facial expressions but her mannerism. Nova seems to slink back against the wall, obviously feeling unnoticed.
Ret eventually moseys on by, grinning to himself about some minnow traps he setup for bait.
Shep whistles as he walks with frequent short periods of silence as he tries to remember what it is he's sure he's forgotten.
oO You would think he would get her name right one of these years. It's not like she is new here Oo. "Do you want me to remind him yet again what your name is? Think if we start calling him random names he will get it?". Kar smiles to himself and hopes to get a smile from Susan as well to cheer her up. "Okay, I'm off to get my gear. Need me to take anything out there for you as you will be joining us a bit later?" Kar waves at everyone as he starts to head out.
"Just some snacks and maybe a blanket." she replies.
Jiinan goes back to gather his fishing gear, and meets up with the others casting his line and just taking a few moments to relax. "Now this is the way to be living, everyone getting along and having a good time." He says to no one in particular. I suspect the sheriff has another motive for getting us out here, but let’s just wait and see what happens.
Corvus waves at everyone as he begins to walk off, "I'll catch up with you guys in a little bit." As he turns to run off and grab his stuff.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
Meanwhile,
Life's been interesting not ever meeting your parents.
