“Yeah, that’s why I was saying we should go somewhere more private,” Dane replies to Meg, his tone low but steady. “I didn’t know its history at the time, so… I wanted us to have more privacy to dig deeper.” He turns his attention back to Tayla and Michelle, his posture still respectful but his mind clearly racing. “My apologies, Tayla… Miss Lightrunner,” he says with a small nod. “There are a few other things I found, but not a lot yet. I’ll definitely let you know if I learn anything useful.” He hesitates for a beat, weighing how much to reveal, then adds, “By the way, does the name Goodson mean anything to you? Two of the user profiles on the tablet had that name in them.”

Michelle looks confused as Tayla candidly shrugs, "No. Do you know who they are?"

Meanwhile, there seems to be a stir of concerned rumor spreading through the camp. Meg listens in and finally says, "Hey Dane? There appears to be a fire south of town," as she points at a small dark gray pillar of smoke, rising over the horizon. "The firetrucks are on the way." Dane just now notices the sounds of the fire engines sirens blaring as it slowly leaves town, leaving its telltale dust cloud in its wake.

"I hope that's just a coincidence." Dane sounds worried. "Meg, do you have a safe back at the library we can stash this in until we can find out what's happening?" The woman's story probably just has him jumping at shadows, but he's definitely a little worried.

"I do at the library," she shrugs, "Will that work?"

"Hopefully." .oO Hopefully I’m worried about nothing. Oo. The story about the girl, the tablet, everything—it’s left Dane feeling jumpy. He gathers the box of goods, carefully placing the tablet back inside before closing the lid. “Thank you again,” he says to Michelle and Tayla. “I’ll be in touch. If you think of anything else, I’m usually at the library—or Meg can get word to me.”

He gives a small, polite nod, then steps outside. The air feels heavier now. Does he detect the faint smell of smoke drifting in from the South. Dane scans the horizon once before heading off with Meg toward the library.

If you think of anything else, I’m usually at the library, or Meg can get word to me.”

He gives a small, polite nod, then steps outside. Michelle and Tayla wave goodbye, although, Dane can hear Tayla asking Michelle, "Please, can I go with them?" followed by, "No, leave them be. They'll be back," from Michelle.

The air feels heavier now. Does he detect the faint smell of smoke drifting in from the South. Dane scans the horizon once before heading toward the library. The smoke is still there, but he smells no smoke.

The two take the long walk back towards town. Dane spots Frank and Johnny participating in the human piñata. He's heard that it's fun and can award some decent prizes. After passing them, they walk by the obstacle course, still busy as ever. Only a few people have completed stage one since Teddy and Frank completed it.

Upon reaching town, they find it easier to walk through the residential streets past his house and behind the library. Meg unlocks the door, letting them both in. She locks it behind her. Behind the checkout desk, she keys in the safe passcode and opens it for Dane. A few old books are already in there as she places 'The Canterbury Tales' inside. She then moves aside for Dane to place his new toy in there.

He hesitantly locks the tablet up in the safe… almost stopping to turn it back on again, but forces his curiosity down.

"I'm sorry, Meg." He turns toward her, rubbing the back of his neck. "I guess I'm just a little spooked." He lets out a small, awkward laugh. "Okay, maybe more than a little spooked. Between knowing the password, the tablet recognizing me, what the old lady said about my soul or whatever—and then the story about its history and the fire..." He finally pauses to take a breath.

Seeing Meg’s beautiful face staring back at him steadies him a little. The tension in his shoulders eases. "I’m just being crazy, right?" he says more softly. Before she can answer, a grin creeps across his face. "You’re so beautiful," he says, the words slipping out unfiltered. The thought makes him grin wider—maybe, just maybe, she really does want to be with a crazy computer geek. For some reason, he already feels safer just knowing she’s there.

"Boy," She laughs, "You're really rattled!" She closes the safe, spins the dial, making sure it's locked. "I didn't know that it recognized you. That's actually creepy." She stands back up, habitually leaning against the checkout counter, glancing over to the computer where Dane usually sits. She lets out a sigh. "Well, I suppose you won't be coming in here as often." She frowns, "How do you know it recognized you? What did it do?"

"Well… it automatically set me up as the new primary user—by name—just from seeing my face in one of the cameras." He shakes his head a little, still half in disbelief. "And how did I know the password? It’s like I’d seen it before… or remembered it, but without knowing where from."

He smiles at her again and takes a hesitant step closer. "And don’t worry—you’re not getting rid of me that easily. You paid for the tablet, no matter who it thinks its owner is. So technically, it’s yours." His grin widens a little. "Guess that means I’ll have to come over here if I want to mess around with it, right?"

He chuckles softly, taking another step toward her. "Seriously though… thanks for paying for it. I wouldn’t have had enough on my own."

"Huh..." she looks confused.

"Who else am I going to spend money on?" She wraps her arms around his shoulders and kisses him. After the kiss, she leans back to look into his eyes, "Wow, it really concerned you. Most emotion I've seen across your face today." She giggles, then seems in thought, "How did it know who you were based on a picture? We've lived here all of our lives."

He wraps his arms around her waist, pulling her a little closer as they share another brief kiss. He really likes when she does that—he wishes she would do that more often.

"I don’t know," he says quietly. "Maybe it’s something from when I was younger." He hesitates, then adds, "Did you ever hear how I got this scar? Or why my face looks a little… off?"

He gives a small, self-conscious smile before continuing. "A few years back, I was picked for this special cybernetics workshop. I spent some time in Smith Falls, working in a lab. Got exposed to some chemicals that messed with my skin, and later, when we were installing this prototype sensor, there was this flash burn. That’s what left the scar."

He searches her face as he talks, trying to read her reaction. "Maybe the tablet recognized something from that—some kind of database from the program. Or maybe..." He pauses, his brow furrowing slightly. "Maybe my family wasn’t always from here. My dad’s got some old stuff in the attic. Things that don’t fit—like an old military uniform with a strange red, white, and blue flag. When I saw it, I felt like I should recognize it, but I couldn’t place it. It was the same kind of feeling I got when that password popped into my head. Like a memory that’s there, but… disconnected from everything else." He gives a small, uncertain laugh. "It just… was."
