Re: Re: Rifts Dead Man's Hand - Festival Day - Dane

While Meg is distracted by the books, Dane wanders over to take a closer look at the tablet. Turning it over in his hands, he studies the scratches and scuffs, trying to get a sense of how well it’s held up. “Okay if I turn this on?” he asks the old woman, glancing up at her with a polite smile. He doesn’t exactly have a hundred credits, but maybe there’s room to bargain or barter for it. He’s heard the natives do stuff like that.

The old lady nods, stating, "It turns on, but no one has been able to get past the login. So, you will have to factory reset it. We don't have any of the manuals to do that." She replies, while watching him fumble around with it.

He sees the emblem 'Titan Industries' emblazoned across the top of the tablet in metallic red lettering. He's never heard of it. It's seen some use but has a protective rubber coating around it to cushion against drops and sudden jarring. He presses the power button. The screen glows to live with the 'Titan Industries' splash logo, then runs through a verbose P.O.S.T. and then a password screen. Holding it, Dane feels like he knows or has seen the password before and quickly types in, "Hag14@llwinsWArch," and achieves a successful login on the first attempt. Browsers, file directories, games, apps galore and the device is actually showing that it has a signal from somewhere."

The old woman and Tayla stare at Dane in disbelief, "How did you do that?" They both ask in unison.

"Yay!" Meg screeches as she holds a book up like she'd just won a grand prize, "I've been looking for this book forever! 'The Canterbury Tales' by Chaucer! It's as old as humanity, I heard." One of the sales people promptly tell her that the book is sixty credits, causing her to frown.

Dane blinks at the screen in disbelief. “I... I don’t know,” he says, his voice carrying that uncertain edge between awe and confusion. It just felt right... like I’d seen it somewhere before.

He quickly starts scanning through the icons, looking for something that resembles a settings app. Maybe he can find a name, a user profile — something that explains why the password came to him so easily. (OOC: Time to put that Computer Operator skill to use.)

Meg’s sudden squeal makes him jump. He turns toward her, startled, then grins despite himself. “Look what I found!” he says, holding the tablet up for her to see before turning back to it, curiosity already pulling him in again. Whoever this belonged to — and why he somehow knew the login — he’s determined to find out.

Dane blinks at the screen in disbelief. “I... I don’t know,” he says, his voice carrying that uncertain edge between awe and confusion. oO(It just felt right... like I’d seen it somewhere before)Oo He quickly starts scanning through the icons, looking for something that resembles a settings app. Maybe he can find a name, a user profile; something that explains why the password came to him so easily.

Meg’s sudden squeal makes him jump. He turns toward her, startled, then grins despite himself. “Look what I found!” he says, holding the tablet up for her to see before turning back to it, curiosity already pulling him in again. Whoever this belonged to and why he somehow knew the login. He’s determined to find out.

"Awesome!" She squeaks again, "See? This was a great idea!" She walks up to the old lady, "We'll take the book and the computer thingy," and hands them 160 credits and immediately begins carefully thumbing through the book.

Meanwhile, seeing that Meg is distracted, he turns his attention back to the computer. He easily finds the settings, and the user list. The main owner of the tablet is agoodson, the password that he'd used. There is a guest account, which is locked. Dgoodson, which is a power user. He also identifies an account with no username and can only be accessed remotely.

A continued scan through the settings reveals that the connection is long range, but he's unsure how. The signal is coming from about 286 miles away. Direction, even while using the onboard spectrometer, is undetermined. He finds packet sniffers, software to setup proxy servers, multiple defunct vpn profiles as well as short range data scrapers. Cloning software, which is inaccessible, but could be useful for cloning computers, websites, or any computing hardware or even firmware to shift to a virtual platform.

The more Dane looks through the computer, the more he understands how much more advanced it is to the library computer. He finds documentation on how it uses a dual multicore quantum tech processor with predictive computing. He finds several directories which have a polymorphic cryptographic passwords, meaning that the password, for these folders, changes every 300 milliseconds, making it impossible to type and hit enter even if he knew the password. It makes his head begin to hurt.

The storage capacity far exceeds anything he could possibly need. The current used storage is less than one percent. Its capacity exceeds five yottabytes. Dane finds it difficult to calculate how massive it is. He just knows it's far more than any current technology is capable of.

Several of the folders are labeled in a completely different language, maybe even special code characters that Dane's never seen before. (ooc: maybe technocan?)

There's a five lens camera capable of nightsight, infrared, microscopic and telescopic enhancements. He finds a sound filtration microphone capable of noise cancellation and acoustic analysis. He sees a faint red light begin to glow next to the lenses as he's examining it.

And then he hears the computer say, "Hello, Dane Stryker. We've added you as a primary user: dstryker, please change your password before logging out. How else can I help you?"

Meg is so excited about her book that she's hopping around like an excited child. Tayla is shoulder surfing, trying to figure out everything Dane is doing, exclaiming, "How are you doing that so fast?"

Dane almost drops the tablet when it calls him out by name, his pulse spiking. .oO How did it… know that? Oo. Even his thoughts stumble to finish the question.

He hesitates only a second before setting a new password, turning his body slightly so Tayla can’t peek. “I’m just good with computers,” he says, the words sounding casual but coming out just a little too fast.

His eyes dart back over the specs, scanning every detail the system reveals. .oO Dual quantum cores… predictive processing… yottabytes? No way. Oo. His fingers itch with the need to dig deeper, to see what else this thing can do. For a moment, he’s grinning — actually grinning — like a kid who just found a working spaceship under the Christmas tree.

But the feeling doesn’t last. Beneath the awe, something cold uncoils in his gut. The more powerful it seems, the more wrong it feels that it knows who he is. He swallows hard, then forces himself to shut the tablet down.

He glances over at Meg to see if she's still lost in her book, her joy as bright as ever. For a second, he almost wants to pretend everything’s fine — to just stay here, buy trinkets to a ride, enjoy the day. But he can’t. Not now.

“Meg,” he says quietly, waiting until she looks up. The tension in his eyes says what he doesn’t dare voice aloud. “I think we should take our stuff and head back to my place.” The look is just for her. Not the playful looks or the emotional stares they were exchanging earlier — the mix of excitement and worry — tries to tell her everything: I found something big… and I don’t know if it’s good or bad yet.

"Primary user... established..." comes the response from the computer. Dane is swift enough that Tayla isn't able to rubberneck the password.

Even so, she squeaks, "Wow! You're like a genius! Are you a corporate super agent?" with an excited smile.

Meg is still giddy about her thick, hard backed book. It does look very old and tattered. "Ooo, I have book restoration equipment back at the library! And the text is so clear!"

“Meg,” he says quietly. She stops reading and looks up. The tension in his eyes says what he doesn’t dare voice aloud. 'I think we should take our stuff and head back to my place.' For a moment, she just keeps smiling at Dane cradling the tablet, almost like a newborn. She looks as though she's about to say something when her smile slowly fades, "Are you okay?"

“Yeah,” he lies, managing a half-smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “I just wanna get this stuff put away so we don’t have to pack it around all day.”

He turns back to the old woman, nodding toward the box of assorted cables and accessories. “All this other stuff comes with the tablet?” he asks, doing his best to sound casual. His fingers tighten slightly around the device, though — like he’s afraid it might vanish if he lets go.

After a brief pause, he adds, “So where did you get this old thing, anyway?”

"Yes, it does." The old woman nods. "Don't lose any of it. It's irreplaceable."

After a brief pause, he adds, “So where did you get this old thing, anyway?”

Tayla becomes excited as the old woman begins telling the story, handing Dane a cup of steaming hot tea, "Our warriors needed to rescue young Tayla... This was a few years ago. When they arrived at the creature's lair, this was one of the treasures that Tayla was amongst. For years, our best technologist couldn't do what you just did in five seconds.

"That small computer has been a mystery and Tayla has always wanted to know what it does. She said the creature said that it's value was great. Unfortunately, our warriors had slain the creature, so we don't know why. Maybe you could tell us?" She looks to Dane with a thin-lipped, hopeful smile. "Last year, a man came looking for it, but attacked our warriors. The man wouldn't surrender and had to be killed. I know that the value of the computer is more than we sold it. But it seems to also bring great mystery and trouble. We need to protect Tayla and make sure that her spirit is no longer bound to it."

She considers Dane for a moment, "Your eyes tell of a journey much longer than your age. The scars of technology, both physical, mental and spiritual have taken their toll on you, young man. But if anyone can figure this out, I believe it's you." She reaches out to shake Dane's hand, "My name is Michelle Lightrunner. What's yours? and may we come visit if we find out anything new?"

Taking Michelle’s hand gently, Dane nods. “Thank you for sharing that story.” His voice carries a genuine note of respect, though his mind is spinning a mile a minute. He tries to recall what little he knows about native customs — whether she’d expect ceremony or simplicity — and decides sincerity is safest.

Releasing her hand, he glances at Meg, then back to Michelle. “Maybe we better sit and talk for a minute after all.” Turning back to the elder, he adds, “May I sit?”

(OOC: Assuming she accepts.)

Dane lowers himself to the ground, crossing his legs carefully. The cup of tea warms his hands. He tests a small sip then looks back at Michelle.

Speaking to all three women, now, he begins “The little bit I found out…” He hesitates, trying to frame it in terms that make sense outside of his own tech-speak. “It’s extremely powerful — maybe more powerful than anything I’ve ever heard of. Definitely more than anything I’ve seen. It’s connected to a… server, or data source, hundreds of miles away.”

He pauses, his brow furrowing as a darker thought dawns. “By turning it on and connecting to that source, I might’ve… accidentally sent out a signal. A kind of beacon to whoever’s been looking for it.” He looks up at her, eyes sharp now, the analytical part of his brain in full motion.

“When that man came for it before — do you know if anyone had tried to turn it on, or log into it recently?”

Releasing her hand, he glances at Meg, then back to Michelle. “Maybe we better sit and talk for a minute after all.” Turning back to the elder, he adds, “May I sit?” She gestures to a wooden folding chair.

Dane sits, noticing the chair is impressively sturdy. The cup of tea warms his hands. He tests a small sip then looks back at Michelle. The tea, as usual, is bitter at first, but seems to have a hint of huckleberry in it.

Speaking to all three women, he begins “The little bit I found out…” He hesitates, trying to frame it in terms that make sense outside of his own tech-speak. “It’s extremely powerful. Maybe more powerful than anything I’ve ever heard of. Definitely more than anything I’ve seen. It’s connected to a… server, or data source, hundreds of miles away.”

Tayla and Michelle listen with awestruck interest. Michelle nods, expecting more to the story.

“When that man came for it before. Do you know if anyone had tried to turn it on, or log into it recently?”

"Yes, once a month, we travel to some of the nearby communities to charge it back up, but we never once got past the login screen. Our best expert used something called... ermmm." She tries to think of the word, "Code line? To explore what he could, but the computer would just turn off, stating 'unauthorized. access denied.'" She sighs, "Eventually, we asked the spirits and have discovered that this technology isn't for us. It's not meant for our tribe. Maybe it's for you." She confidently grins.

Tayla, in her hyperactive excitedness, leans on Dane's arm, "Will you tell me if you find anything new? It talked to me once, when I was..." She glances worriedly at Michelle, "When I was going to be eaten..."

Meg frowns, "So... Is that thing dangerous?" she points at the tablet.

"I don't think so," Michelle ponders, "In two years, that one violent man has been the only person to come looking for it. He, with all of his equipment, was no match for our warriors."

Meg flashes Dane a quizzical look, "We better figure out what we can."

“Yeah, that’s why I was saying we should go somewhere more private,” Dane replies to Meg, his tone low but steady. “I didn’t know its history at the time, so… I wanted us to have more privacy to dig deeper.”

He turns his attention back to Tayla and Michelle, his posture still respectful but his mind clearly racing. “My apologies, Tayla… Miss Lightrunner,” he says with a small nod. “There are a few other things I found, but not a lot yet. I’ll definitely let you know if I learn anything useful.”

He hesitates for a beat, weighing how much to reveal, then adds, “By the way—does the name Goodson mean anything to you? Two of the user profiles on the tablet had that name in them.”

He studies Michelle’s reaction closely, the analytical part of his mind filing away every flicker of expression.
