Looking at the imprint, checking the direction it's facing, Tyran announces the direction loud enough for all to hear, "He's headed Southwest! Move out!" He proceeds to trot that direction, "Those wolves will be free in a few minutes. We should not be here when that happens."
Megana pushes forward behind Vi, both of them trailing Tyran’s fading shimmer. The rest of the group falls in line. Payton and Ant limping in last, bloodied, hurting, but still braced for whatever comes next.
They trek nearly half a mile before Tyran slows. The mutant dog’s tracks simply… vanish. In their place lies a massive 8-by‑4‑foot depression punched deep into the snow. Something huge made it, while the edges are half‑erased by a sudden blast of wind, the kind a hovercycle might kick up.
To the south, three wolves stand watching in silence, curious, but not hostile. Megana feels it in her gut: wrong pack, wrong territory. They’re not here for them. But if they are, their master isn't around to tell them to attack.
Vi crouches and spots a scrap of paper pinned into the snow by a heavy stone, edges fluttering in the cold breeze.
Ant presses a rag hard against the bite marks along his leg and hip, wincing as he tries to slow the bleeding. Payton studies the arrow jutting from his chest, fingers probing around the wound, calculating the safest way to pull it free. Dusty rolls his shoulders, muscles tight and aching from being dragged like a chew toy. Adam looks over the group and nods once. “It’s almost over. Be strong.”
Trevor tosses Ant a roll of gauze and tape. “Wrap it before you infect it with all yer fiddlin’.” He glances at Payton, "You too," then Dusty, "Something tells me that this isn't yer first rodeo..."
Dusty just grins, then winces, trying to determine if tomorrow will be a miserable day to get out of bed.
