As Brother Tobius turns to speak to Gerard (and assuming he's no longer looking at Darl), Darl silently snatches up another item off the floor, transfering it to a pocket within his cloak (or simply moves it to the floor between his crossed legs, if he is still partially within Brother Tobius's site and the motion would otherwise be too obvious ... in which case he will wait for the distraction of the others arriving to tuck his new acquisition out of site).

If he gets the chance, Darl will do the same for two or three small items. One potential target would be the stone which Father Malaki had used in his attempt to fight off the demon, though anything small and inconspicuous would do. The whole time, Darl will continue absent-mindedly fiddling with the small statuette out in the open; with the intent that, if Brother Tobius didn't fully trust him (and Darl was sure he didn't), he would have been sure to notice Darl pick up the statuette ... and, assuming he was not too preoccupied to notice even that, Brother Tobius would now likely be paranoid about the possibility of that statuette disappearing.

Of course, this is exactly what Darl wanted, as he had no intention of taking the statuette. By making it the object of focus, and letting Brother Tobius see him set it back down before they leave, Darl was using it as a distraction to hide the fact that other items may have gone missing.

While it may seem carefully calculated and laid out as part of a master plan, the truth is that Darl does this almost sub-consciously; guided by some deeply buried compulsion that has trained his hands, honed his judgement, and sharpened his reflexes over time ... to the point where they simply perform the action as a second nature, taking advantage of the down-time while the brain is focused on other priorities.

"Ok then now we need to figure out how to proceed from here. If the Shade is still here is there anyway to defend ourselves, the people, and the town? Also we dont know if he has any friends around as well. I'm thinking this might be a good time to get everyone back together, exchange information and figure out our next course of action. What do you think Brother Tobius?"
