Megana finds her spot after getting her food and tea thanking them and then waiting toveat till after they are done thanking the spirits.

Vi accepts her bowl with a quiet nod and a small bow of thanks to the women before finding a comfortable place to sit. She listens respectfully as Bayla begins her prayer to the spirits. Megana settles nearby, yet closer to the fire, waiting patiently for the blessing to end.

When Bayla finishes, the tribe performs their familiar ritual: a single unified stomp and a loud, echoing “Mitákuye Oyás’iŋ!” Vi and Meg have heard them from the cages, but never witnessed it. Then everyone digs in. Dusty resumes eating as if nothing unusual has happened.

As the meal winds down and most of the warriors, shamans, and the chief finish eating, one of the warriors rises. He’s tall, painted in white and red war paint, with shoulder‑length dark hair and a few scars across his knuckles and arms. He steps into the center near the fire’s edge. “Today, our newest members have agreed to use their troop transport to find and eliminate Fido and his wolves! Today, we will once again rule these lands!” His American is flawless as he lifts a spear overhead, then draws a bone knife from the sheath on his chest.

Dusty leans toward Ant, amused. “Is that thing’s real name Fido?”

Ant snorts. “No. We don’t know his name. We just call him that because it’s funny.”

Payton gestures toward Meg and Vi. “So what are those two supposed to do?”

“They’re joining us and learning our ways,” Adam says, thumping his chest with a hollow smack.

“We’ve dreamed that those two will be the key to defeating… well, Fido,” Bayla adds.

The chief rises. “We never asked if they agree.” He turns to Meg and Vi, giving them a solemn nod. “Will you join our war party in defeating the wolves and their master?”

Many of the warriors look at her in disbelief, as though she has no chance. Finally, the men encourage one of the younger warriors to volunteer. His name is Nathan. He pulls off his furs and bits of wooden armor and sets down his weapons and steps into the middle of the room. People begin moving; making room to simulate a fighting circle.

"Come on, Nate! Don't worry, she's a girl!" One of the warriors laugh.

"You got this, Derpy!" come more words of encouragement. None of them seem to know that Vi is a champion. Dusty even perks, pausing his breakfast to see how this plays out.

Nathan, with hastily trimmed long hair and white warpaint, stands only about five foot four inches tall and weighs maybe 120 pounds. He looks tough enough to fight, but Vi can already tell that she has a two to three inch reach advantage and it's likely that Nate's never lasted more than five seconds in a fight.

Yet, Nathan doesn't wait. It's obvious that he's not accustomed to a referee or bell as he dives forward, attempting to tackle Vi. She just casually steps out of the way as he crashes into the wooden floor. He sits up, picks a splinter from his palm and gets back up. The room quiets down and seems more focused. Vi continues her bouncing routine, trying to get the blood flowing.

Adam walks over and helps him up, "You done?" he asks as Nate nods. Adam, standing half a foot taller than Vi, nods to her, "You warmed up? We don't want to injure too many guys before we go to battle."
