Re: Belle

With a teasing smile, one can tell how she used to melt one's hearts in a previous life, she responds, "I pretty much could have guessed."

Jonesy smiles in return and blushes slightly.

After a few moments of walking, she adds, "Again, I think I would like to meet Father Malaki. People like him give me hopes for the church in the future. Sometimes I get depressed with what I see and hear." She reflects for a moment on the fact that she was part of the problem and possibly Brother Tobius at least may have integrity.

Jonesy thinks for a moment before responding. "What do you mean, 'hope for the church'? The Church is all that keeps the demons from overrunning and enslaving us all. What have you seen and heard in your travels that would make you think otherwise?" Jonesy takes a breath and continues. "I'll admit that their can be bad people in all levels of society, but the Church is above that."

Belle takes a deep breath, "It is very personal so I don't like to talk about it."

The Apok pauses for several minutes before continuing, "I used to be a priestess. My father is a very important priest. Few men are as corrupt as he is. One might say 'like father like daughter.' You could not fall much further than I did."

Belle does not pause as long as she did before, "My father takes almost as much advantage of his position as one can. I, and my sister was, the product of affairs with lesser priestesses. He is very charismatic but he uses the power to overwhelm them. His had is always open for more graft."

"So, yes, I know the rot inside the temple and you do now as well," Belle tells him, a bit depressed. "This does not mean that most in the church are not good people. I would say more are but one has to be careful. This Brother Tobias may very well just be pedant but one much always be careful."

Jonesy walks quietly for a time, unsure how to deal with this potential blow to his faith. He starts to to respond but after opening and closing his mouth silently he thinks some more. "I...I don't really know what to say." He finally admits. "I almost feel angry that you would say such things, but some part of me fears that what you say may have more truth to it than I would openly admit."

ooc: Not getting font colors coming up although might be my poor connection on mobile

ic: "I am sorry," Belle apologizes, "I really did not want to talk about it myself. Humans are humans though, some good and some evil. I think most people are good when it all comes down to it though. All it means is that you have to do the best you can and think about what you are told. We will all fail sometimes. I spent many years of my life failing."

Jonesy seems somewhat placated by Belle's words and walks on in silent contemplation. Before long, the gates loom over them, the thick resin doors swung out wide on a new day. The two join the throng of other people passing through the gates to go about their daily work. Wagons full of moss and fungus come in from the countryside. Obviously traders that didn't make it to town before the gates closed the night before.

A few men manage to look up from their trudging progress to leer at Belle as she passes by. Even though her figure is obscured by her cloak, the glimpse of her face is enough to insight lust in most men and the more unsavory don't mind openly letting their baser thoughts be known.

At one time, Belle would have actually given kind of an appreciative reaction to the men. It is not that she hates men now but she is not interested in their baser instincts.

She will turn to them for a moment, give a dismissive yet hostile expression. Even without her mask, there is something which indicates that there is steel under her beautiful countenance.

Even if some of them are capable of helping with scouting out the location of the goblins attack, there is no way that she could actually trust them.

"I have to wonder if there is any danger of attack out here from the goblins," Belle states.

Belle turns to the passing gawkers for a moment and gives them a dismissive, yet hostile, expression. Even without her mask, there is something which indicates that there is steel under her beautiful countenance.

Some few turn their eyes from hers; embarrassed at being caught leering or frightened by the daggers in her eyes...it's difficult to tell.

"I have to wonder if there is any danger of attack out here from the goblins," Belle states.

"A small party this close to town? Not likely. I've heard of them scouting near the city, but never attacking this close." Jonesy responds. "Once we get out further, we'll want to be on our toes, though. I doubt even a large contingent of the Unholy's army would attack Chisel Town unless it served some other purpose. With the garrison just down the road they would take heavy losses and find themselves smashed against the walls of the city." A note of some pride enters his voice. Perhaps the recent shaking of his faith has already faded a bit from memory.

In her dealings with the Unholy and his minions, Belle never felt the need to associate with the ugly, grubby little creatures known as goblins. She knows virtually nothing about them except that they are that witch, Salome's, little monsters. In her days with the demons she would have gladly slit Salome's throat and taken her place in the Unholy's inner circle. Now she would gladly slit Salome's throat to rid the world of her evil presence....if only it were that easy.

"Not suggesting an attack more like a raid," Belle suggests. "With this disorganized mess, it would be pretty simple to raid those that congregate outside the walls during the night."

"I suspect that you are right for now about the defenses of the city proper," she continues. "They are pretty hard to breach although the Unholy is always plotting the downfall of those not under its thumb. Sometimes seduction, sometimes battle."

The Apok looks up at the solid gates as she prepares to walk outside against the traffic flowing inside the walls.

"Guards keep an eye out for trouble." Jonesy indicates pointing at the ramparts on top of the wall where men and women in uniform watch out over the inside and outside of the immediate surroundings. "I suppose a small raiding party could attack the outskirts of town and be back out before being caught. I guess that's the risk one takes when living out in the open. The entire town of Newhome is out in the open. No walls yet. Probably why the town was attacked."

They are over a foot thick, one pair swinging in and another swinging out to make it doubly hard for anyone to break in.

In Belle's looking around her attention is caught and her eyes follow to an old man talking rapidly as he walks along next to a hand drawn cart. It's not the old man that caught her attention, but rather the hunched figure pulling the cart. If the figure stood up straight it would easily be seven or eight feet tall. But even that isn't truly what caught her attention. Rather, it's the large hands with brushed silver plating ending in sharp claw-like nails that encircle the polls used to draw the cart along.
