Reggie gives her a slightly puzzled look. "No, the Doc just needs someone to keep an eye on her, let him know if she wakes up, slowly feed her water to help with her dehydration, that sorta thing. Ret could do the job just as well, or both of you if you want to continue your conversation. Drive City got hit by the Pecos Bandits, we had a refugee show up earlier today, she might be another, we don't know." Reg tries to understand why she's suspicious, "I just figured if she does wake up she'd rather another girl watching over her than a guy."

"Oh! Okay," she turns to Ret, who looks concerned, "Wanna?"

"Um, no. I have some stuff I was going to research for Shep. I haven't gotten around to it and... well... I probably should," he radiates the discomfort and the obvious excuse may be true... How convenient.

"Oh... kay?" She nods to Reggie, "You can count on me Reg," when she smiles, Reggie notices that her odd orange eyes make her look quite pretty, even though her odd pale complexion seems to borderline a corpse. Ret trots up the library steps and heads inside, flashing a brief guilty expression to Nova.

The radio crackles, "Reggie, we're gonna head back. The flyboys didn't spot anything and it looks pretty calm out here besides the line. Were you done with your patrol and how are things back there?"

Reggie waves to Ret as he heads into the library. When the radio call comes in he pulls it out to answer.

"Roger. I finished my patrol before I reported in the first time. The woman is restrained but still unconscious. Doc Anderson says she's badly dehydrated," Reggie pauses then continues, "I'll be at the clinic if you need me once you get back, Sheriff."

Looking over to Nova as he releases the send button, he says, "Well, since I'm not heading back out I can watch the lady if you have something to take care of. Or you can come along if you'd like."

As he starts to lead Apple back towards the clinic, he pulls out the treat Apple has been pestering him for and gives it to her. "Looks like we are done for the day after all, Apple."

Turning back to Nova (assuming she comes along) he asks, " What's been new with you?"

Reggie waves to Ret as he leaves.

"Oh... kay?" She nods to Reggie, "You can count on me Reg," when she smiles, Reggie notices that her odd orange eyes make her look quite pretty, even though her odd pale complexion seems to borderline a corpse. Ret trots up the library steps and heads inside, flashing a brief guilty expression to Nova.

The radio crackles, "Reggie, we're gonna head back. The flyboys didn't spot anything and it looks pretty calm out here besides the line. Were you done with your patrol and how are things back there?"

"Roger. I finished my patrol before I reported in the first time. The woman is restrained but still unconscious. Doc Anderson says she's badly dehydrated," Reggie pauses then continues, "I'll be at the clinic if you need me once you get back, Sheriff."

"Perfect! Oh yeah, Jack and Mazur were wondering if you wanted to go fishing or head to Lake Crenshaw later. Just relaying the message. Over and out."

He looks over to Nova as he releases the send button, he says, "Well, since I'm not heading back out I can watch the lady if you have something to take care of. Or you can come along if you'd like."

Nova's piercing gaze meets his after watching Ret vanish, "Ummm, yeah! I could." She smiles again, making her gaze more attractive.

As he starts to lead Apple back towards the clinic, he pulls out the treat Apple has been pestering him for and gives it to her. "Looks like we are done for the day after all, Apple." The horse nudges him for more, snorting in protest.

Turning back to Nova, he asks, "What's been new with you?"

"Not much," she sighs, almost sounding defeated, "I can't hold a job very long. I guess I'm really bad for business since no one will support any businesses that hire me. I'm scared that the sheriff will ask me to leave. This is my home!" She moves very close to Reg, touching his arm, "Thank you for being my friend."

idly fending off Apple's questing nose, he smiles sympathetically at Nova.
"That must suck. I know your eyes reminds people of what happened, but you haven't done anything bad. Heck, you're lucky to have survived."

He goes quiet for a minute trying to think of a job that Nova might be able to do and also enjoy. He's not having a lot of luck coming up with something that wouldn't require customers, and it sounds like she'd have a hard time getting those.

OOC: Did an IQ check for Reg, options for jobs would include:
Transcriber
Data Entry (would be nice for Reggie to not have to type up reports)
Lab Tech
Medical Study Group
Truck Driver
Accountant
Janitor
GroundsKeeper
Security
Note: This is dependent on no one knowing who she works for, otherwise they'd shun the business, being still bitter about losing half of their loved ones.

Nova’s voice breaks the silence. “People don’t understand that I’m still me. They just see the monster that did this to me.” Reggie can feel it; she is the same Nova. Same presence, same quiet warmth. But when she lifts her gaze and those altered eyes meet his, he finally understands why everyone else flinches. It was bad enough before,” she whispers. “I kept hoping Corvus would notice me, but now? Everyone notices me… just not the way I want.” Tears streak down her cheeks, thin and shining. “Thank you for thinking of me.”

Reggie just nods and keeps walking beside her. By the time they reach the clinic, Apple throws his head back and lets out a defiant neigh, as if announcing their arrival, then nudges Reg for another treat. He leads Nova inside, where Dr. Anderson is shelving supplies. The doctor looks up immediately, relief brightening his face.

“There you are!” He glances past Reggie toward the woman resting in the other room. “She drank a little, but never fully woke up. It may take time.” He steps forward and pulls Nova into a gentle hug, which she melts into without hesitation. “Welcome back, Nova. How’ve you been holding up? Body temperature behaving itself?”

“Fifty‑five to eighty degrees,” she answers with a small, resigned smile. “As normal.”

“Not exactly what I’d call normal,” he teases, then sees her expression fall. “Ah... sorry, sweetheart. My bedside manners are atrocious.”

“It’s okay,” she murmurs. “I should get used to it.”

The doctor pats Reggie’s shoulder, warm and fatherly. “Well, deputy… how’s the new job treating you?”

Reggie pats her on the shoulder consolingly. He ponders which of his ideas are actually worth suggesting. oOCan Nova even drive a truck? he wonders.

Reggie rolls his eyes at Apple's antics.

"Most days it's pretty routine, Doc, which is a good thing. Today's been somewhat more exciting. Dad said that they're coming back to town, while the Lines are looking wilder than usual, there doesn't seem to be anything actually happening."

"Since I don't need to head back out, I'll stay and keep Nova company while we wait for our mysterious visitor to wake. Speaking of visitors, did that Reck guy stop in?"

"That'd be perfect!" Dr. Anderson smiles as he takes a second look at his clipboard, "Yes, he did. Unfortunate that his lady didn't make it. Seems hardship has befallen most of the area," then he absently hangs it at the foot of the bed and exits the room.

Nova awkwardly stares down in silence. The woman seems to be comfortably sleeping as she finally asks, "Reggie, will it always be like this? Me? Being a freak?"

"well, you're probably stuck with the orange eyes, but I'm sure people will warm back up once more time has passed. It's just that for a lot of people, the memories of what happened are still too fresh."

Reggie leans over and gives her a quick hug.

Reggie leans over and gives her a quick hug. She hugs back tight and longer than Reg expects. When she finally lets go, he sees tears in her eyes, "Thank you..." She stammers.

At that moment, the woman inhales deep and slowly opens her dark brown eyes, confusedly taking in Reggie and Nova. She looks around the room, blinks, then asks, "Who are you? And where am I?"

Standing up and walking over to the woman, Reggie begins talking. "Hello, we met just before you passed out, so you may not remember me. The doc says you're really dehydrated, would you like some water?" He lifts the bottle of water into her line of sight.

After that's dealt with, he continues, "I managed to bring you into town and brought you to our clinic. Oh, I'm Reggie by the way, what's your name?"
