Rifts - DMH - Black Hat vs White Hat - Dane
Re: Rifts - DMH - Black Hat vs White Hat - Dane
Dane can feel the blood drain from his face. "Seriously?" He sighs and leans back in his chair. "Well, then. What kind of trouble has Vi gotten herself into with the old man." he muses. "Any mention about the last time he was seen in town? The original report I came across indicated that it was a few month's back, so if they skipped town right after that, then he's probably not involved. [OOC: I had planned on having Dane reveal his suspicions about Dusty and Violet to his Dad after things settled down after their escape from the prison. How do you want to play that?]

"Sure looks like him, Dane" Joe remarks.

OOC: Flashback sequence? You can direct that one. I can hold off on the rest of their reactions till we get through it.

Shortly after the Festival:
Dane heads into the dining room for breakfast, sits down and finally opens his eyes; blueberry pancakes with whipped cream! George sits down to his usual shredded wheat, pours his milk and leans back, "You said you had something you wanted to talk to me about?"

Re: Rifts - DMH - Black Hat vs White Hat - Dane
Flashback to just after the festival:
Dane hesitates, cutting into the pancakes, mostly to buy himself a second to think. "Yeah." He stares at the plate for a moment. "Meg and I found more than I told you about after the festival."
Once he knows he has his dad's attention, Dane starts there. He gives him the broader version first, about the photograph that turned up in his pocket and how it led into old records neither of them had expected to find. From there, the explanation starts to ramble a little, one point awkwardly flowing into the next. He tells his dad how the search kept circling back to Dusty, Vi, Rifle Ridge, and names that should have been buried in dead history. Lord Stein might be part of it too, if the man in the photo really was him, and Dane cannot shake the feeling that the man Dusty killed at the festival may have been tangled up in the same trail somehow. None of the pieces really proved anything by themselves, but taken together, they did not feel random anymore. By the time he gets through it, it seems obvious that what he and Meg found made it look very possible that Dusty and Vi were not just connected, but family, and that both of them might be tied to something older and uglier than anybody in Fort Hammer seemed to realize. Possibly, however improbably, the same people from those old articles.
When Dane hears himself saying it out loud, he suddenly becomes much more aware of how it sounds. He finally looks up from his plate, awkwardness catching up with him. "I'm not saying I can prove they've done anything," he adds quickly. "And I'm not trying to get either of them in trouble. I just... there were too many coincidences and too many unconnected pieces of information that all seemed to point in the same direction to ignore, and it felt wrong not to tell you." He pauses, frowning at his breakfast again. "If this turns into something later, I'd rather you hear it from me now than get blindsided by it after the fact."

"I understand," George nods, deep in thought, taking a moment to absorb it all; probably where Dane gets it from. He then inhales deep, "You know what I think?" he doesn't wait for an answer, "I think we should keep this between us as to not complicate things for your friend anymore than it already has. She did nothing wrong. She's just a troublesome anomaly and quite a few folks are gunning for her. Agreed?" He still seems heavily in thought. He then glances at Dane, giving a worrisome half-smile.

Re: Rifts - DMH - Black Hat vs White Hat - Dane
"Yeah, agreed." Dane says with some relief. It feels good to get it off his chest and not have his dad immediately telling him he's crazy...although that last part has him a little concerned, to. His corner of the world isn't prepared to accept timelines that don't match up with physical evidence to the contrary. Dane hopes that Vi and Megana are safe. They weren't really close friends, but they were still a part of his life for years.

Re: Rifts - DMH - Black Hat vs White Hat - Dane
Dane's dad frowns, flashing a concerned glance to him, "That would mean that he's still in the area."
"Yes it would. He's still wanted for murder and kidnapping a minor... possibly two." The sheriff adds.
"Maybe that's what he was doing around those kids," Mosley contributes, "He may have been scoping more victims."

Re: Rifts - DMH - Black Hat vs White Hat - Dane
Dane considers it for a minute before responding. "Well, according to the report, it's been a couple of months, so if he hasn't been seen since, maybe they're not in town anymore." He tries to keep the hope out of his voice. He's less concerned about Dusty, but he doesn't want Vi dragged back to Fort Hammer just to be treated like a monster for powers she never asked for.

"Possible, son," George nods as Joe seems to pause, as if noticing something, then glances back and forth between Dane and his dad with a faint, knowing nod.
Mosley doesn't notice as he has an idea, "I'll go thumb through some of the files and see if any missing children's cases might have anything," as he exits the server room, leaving the three standing there.
"Alright, you two. What are you hiding? You two are terrible liars," the sheriff smirks.

Re: Rifts - DMH - Black Hat vs White Hat - Dane
Dane looks at his dad before answering. "Vi got a raw deal after the festival. She didn't do anything to Teddy, but the town was ready to kill her for being a d-bee. I barely got out of there without getting a beatdown just for mentioning d-bees." He watches the sheriff's reaction before continuing, trying to judge whether the man is going to have a problem with a d-bee sympathizer. "If Dusty and Vi... and maybe Megana... are still around, I don't want my friends getting swept up in some kind of witch hunt pretending to be justice." He pauses to look at his dad again, making sure it's okay to continue. "I suspect Dusty and Vi are actually related, so I don't think he'd knowingly do anything to put her in harm's way."

At the last comment, Joe's frown disappears as his disappointed blank gaze moves to George, "You told him, ya son of a bitch?"
"N.. NO! He figured it out somehow!" Dane's dad back peddles, Dane's never seen that except when his mom was alive.
