Shep turns from the pair behind the refrigerator case and says. “Stay there. Don’t move. Cover your ears.” Then he pivots toward the shambling man, closes the distance in quickly, and drives a single full-force strike into its head to end it fast without risking a rail-gun blast in the confined aisle.

Optics show the female cover the child's ears as Shep miscalculates and completely tramples one of the aisle shelves. The man turns its head, revealing orangish-red eyes, who says, "Cover your ears."

OOC:
Shep: 5
Man: 8

As Shep crushes the merchandise underneath his armored feet, the man charges, pushing against the Silver Eagle, actually slowing it down.

"Wow, it's strong!" Carl says, exhibiting surprise in his voice as Shep tries pushing against it; it pushes back, sliding the power armor's feet backwards amongst the smashed goods. Shep tries to punch it in the head, but the man just lowers his head, pushing harder. So Shep just places his mechanical hand over the man's head and squeezes it into a fist, spraying gore everywhere as the corpse collapses, causing Shep to stumble forward.

The woman and the child slowly stand up, peeking between glass bottles of milk. They look as terrified of Shep as they did the undead.

Shep looks back at the pair through visored eyes; the lights of the market reflecting back at the two...masking the face inside the helmet. "Am I a bad person, Carl?" Shep says in a low, resigned voice for Carl's virtual ears alone. "The way they look at me...am I the monster, Carl? Poor Nova." He sighs. "Would she be better off if I'd finished what I started? Would that have...would that have made me the monster?" His voice rings hollowly in his ears.

Finally, over external speakers he says "Come on, then, let's get you to the clinic. You'll be safe there...at least safer than you are here." His voice sounds tired as he talks to the girls in front of him. He scans the area again as he turns to guide the pair to the door.

"I think you did the right thing, Shep. You're expending all possibilities before executing a final solution. Pardon my poor choice of words," Carl sincerely states, "I think you're ancestors would be proud, including my original self. It's what he would have done."

Finally, over external speakers Shep says, "Come on, then, let's get you to the clinic. You'll be safe there... At least safer than you are here." His voice sounds tired as he talks to the girls in front of him. He scans the area again as he turns to guide the pair to the door.

The woman and young girl, maybe seven or eight years old, stand and walk to the side, open the access to the fridge door and exit. They're coated in blood and shaking. Their eyes are still trying to decide if they're seeing reality or not. From everyday, mundane town chores to fighting zombies and seeing flying power suits with enough power to level half a small city.

"Th... thank you," Beatrice replies. Shep recognizes her. She brings Jacqueline to the library to pick out books to read each week. She's usually with her husband... Shep looks at the man he just neutralized. So does Jackie, tears forming in her blank eyes. They slowly walk for the front doors of the market, avoiding debris and watching for blind corners, as they follow Shep outside.

The streets are still clear as the sheriff and Vargas are hauling rucksacks full of rifles and ammunition to the clinic. Reggie is the only person that Shep notices isn't outside anymore. Escorting Beatrice and her daughter feels like an eternity.

Upon arriving, they go inside for examination, being escorted by the Hispanic sentry. Sheriff Harper approaches Shep after leaving the clinic, "We have a better fighting chance now," he glances back to the clinic, "Nova's awake again. Apparently sedatives only work for about ten minutes on her, but seems cognitively normal. How are things on your end?" His blank gaze seems permanently fixed.

“Hank, how are you holding up?” Shep says quietly. “I know it’s been a tough day, but the town needs you. We’ll grieve our dead later, right?”

Shep checks that Vargas isn’t within earshot, then leans in and angles himself to block other sight lines before removing his helmet so he can look the sheriff in the eyes. “Look at me.” He pauses until Hank focuses on him. “I know I’m just the old guy from the library, but today we have to be more than we were yesterday.” Shep pushes down the insecurities clawing at him, because right now they serve no purpose. “The town needs us strong. I promise we’ll bury our dead and mourn them properly. But for now, we protect Reggie and the rest of the survivors. Right?” As soon as he knows that Hank understands the gravity of his words, he puts his helmet back on stands up straight.

“Hank, how are you holding up?” Shep asks quietly. “I know it’s been a tough day, but the town needs you. We’ll grieve our dead later, right?”

"I'm fine," Hank lies.

Right?”

The sheriff grits his teeth, "I never thought you were weak, old man. You're more like your father than you know. Glad to have you back," the first signs of the old Hank return as he smiles, giving the power armor's shoulder a good friendly slap, as though he's slapping away all of the trauma that took Shep away, "It only took about a decade."

Shep puts his helmet back on stands up straight, ready to save Camp Wilson.

OOC: I plan to move this game forward now. I'll send over Shep's character, whenever you need it, to begin leveling him up.
