EOTC: The Living Nightmare - Shep
Re: EOTC: The Living Nightmare - Shep
Shep lets out a low, frustrated breath, part sadness, part irritation. He lines up the shot carefully, scanning for anything—or anyone—in the background that might be in the path of the rail gun's projectile. With a bit of luck, he can take down two of them with a single rail gun round.
Sgt. Williams steps forward and dispatches the two younger undead as dignified as possible as Shep takes one final aim at the other two. The moment the husband steps in too close to his wife, Shep squeezes off a single round. The top halves of both disappear in a violent spray of blood, flesh and bone.
The Sgt is silent for a moment, then finally says, "Shall we?"

Re: EOTC: The Living Nightmare - Shep
After a brief pause, and a quick, silent prayer to whatever gods might still be listening, Shep answers in a flat voice, “Onward and upward, I suppose.” True to his words, he lifts back into the air, angling away from the bridge and toward the last known position of the sheriff. His sensors sweep steadily as he flies, eyes and instruments searching for any sign of survivors—or anyone in immediate danger.

Sgt Williams follows closely behind. They pass over more of the river, but the foliage provides too much cover in case some of the turned monsters could be lurking in the vegetation. They soon reach the small farm, where the sheriff was last seen with Al, his friend. The house looks the same, but the barn door has about eight of the undead trying to force their way in. Something solid must be blocking the doors as Shep remembers that the doors had some give, even while barred shut. Three of the undead, with their heads mostly destroyed, lay on the gravel road between the house and the barn.
"Sir, I'm assuming the people you're looking for are inside of the barn. What's our primary course of actions and restraints?" Williams asks.

Re: EOTC: The Living Nightmare - Shep
“Probably a good guess. Let’s clear the area. Weapons hot. Stay airborne and mind your downrange. Shoot parallel to the walls and into the ground. No innocent casualties.” As he finishes the order, Shep sweeps the barn and surrounding area with a quick thermal pass, looking for heat signatures—both to gauge how many might still be alive behind the doors and to spot any half-turned who might still be saved.

Shep's thermal imagers show at least a dozen and a half individuals insider the barn, all facing the main doors and seemingly each holding some form of weapon.
"Roger that. I'll stay airborne. It may create a few craters into the ground. Nothing a good shovel can't fix." Williams replies as he briefly lands, drawing a few of them away from the barn. Some are fast, but most slow. He focus on the fast ones and easily picks them off with a round each.
OOC: Five slow ones left. Actions? Shep is at 2050 exp. Not sure when he hits level 2

Re: EOTC: The Living Nightmare - Shep
Shep arcs wide, circling opposite Williams to keep the undead split. He engages the remaining slow movers with deliberate, single rail gun shots, keeping his fire tight and angled into the ground to avoid the barn and anything behind it.
As the last of them fall, his attention shifts back to the structure itself. He scans the barn for an upper-level access point—loft doors, hay bays, anything that might provide an alternate entry. Most barns were built with them, and if there’s a way in without forcing the main doors, he wants to find it.

OOC: Initiative order
Shep 11
Williams: 6
Zombies: 12
As he does so, the zombies seem to make it incredibly easy by swarming underneath both power armors. Shep takes a shot, splitting one in half as Williams completely misses with his shot, creating a dusty crater in the ground. Shep, yet again, blows another one in half as Williams blows the upper half of the third one into a red spray across several yards of dirt. Shep misses the fourth one as Williams takes out the same one in similar fashion to his last. Shep's final shot on the fifth is from straight above, leaving only arms and legs wriggling on the ground while the head and torso disappear in a gruesomely cratered pile.
Williams and Shep notice that the two Shep split in half are still alive, crawling around trying to claw up at them. Williams drops down and lands feet first on their heads, instantly killing them. This completes the elimination of the visible undead.

He remembers that Hank and Mel had an upper loft door that only Reggie, Ryan and Jack really used to stare out over the fields and the town beyond. He flies up and finds that they're barred shut from the inside.
OOC2: Shep is now at 2150 exp.

Re: EOTC: The Living Nightmare - Shep
Shep settles into a brief hover near the loft doors, then keys his external comms. “Sergeant, take a recon pass around the property while I check on the civilians. I’ve been spending time in town during my mission, so they should recognize me. I may be able to get them to open the barn without forcing the doors.”
His tone stays even, procedural. “I want eyes on anything moving—no surprises while I assess their condition. Call out if you see a secondary threat or any hostiles on an approach vector.” As Williams lifts off to comply, Shep drifts closer to the loft doors and sets down in the clearest patch of ground he can find. He switches to a lower-power comm setting and calls out toward the barn. “This is Shep. It’s clear out here. Let’s get those doors open so we can talk—I’ve brought help.”

Eventually, the loft doors open. Hank and Al peer out along with a few dozen others, including Susan. "Shep?" The sheriff asks peering inquisitively at the power armor, "I knew it was a weapon but... I didn't think it was a fancy looking SAMAS. You secretly a member of the army now?"
Meanwhile, from up above, the Sergeant's loudspeaker sparks to life, "Colonel, we have two horses incoming. It's that group of kids we saw on our way here."

Re: EOTC: The Living Nightmare - Shep
“Yeah… long story,” Shep replies, his tone dry. “For now, call me Lieutenant Colonel Daniels in front of the Coalition flyboys helping us out. This SAMAS isn’t exactly legal, so I put together a recon cover story. Seemed easier than trying to convince them not to arrest me—or shoot me—on sight.”
His helmet turns slightly as he takes in the faces clustered behind the doors. “Is anyone hurt? We’re setting up the clinic as a safe zone. The doctor’s already there and working nonstop.”
For just a second, his gut tightens at the memory of Nova’s injuries—his doing. “Nova’s in bad shape, but she’s alive. The doc’s doing everything he can.” He shifts his stance, keeping his body language calm and reassuring. “Sergeant Williams is up on aerial recon right now. We can escort you to the clinic as soon as you’re ready.” A brief pause. Practical, as always. “Before we move, is there anywhere nearby we could pick up weapons or ammo? Every bit helps.”
Shep tips the Silver Eagle's helmet upward and answers over the external speakers, his voice measured and commanding. “Copy, Sergeant. Intercept, assist and direct them this way.” He pauses, aware of how exposed the words sound without a private channel. "Just keep eyes on them and steer them wide if something trails in.” His gaze settles back on the barn doors. “They’re not trouble. If you know them, just let them come in easy. They’re probably as rattled as the rest of us."
