“Dammit… thought Ret was handling that,” Shep mutters inside the helmet as he turns to follow Nico’s path. He switches the external speakers back on long enough to project his voice down the hallway where the survivors are clustered. His tone snaps into the kind of command that expects obedience on the first try: “Close and secure that door. Sit tight. We’ll be back for you once the rest of the building’s clear.” With that, he moves to catch up to Nico, keeping his sensors sweeping for anything the thermals might’ve missed.

Shep checks all of the doors on the way as Ret eventually does close the door with a slam. He can still hear them as Ret says, "Okay... maybe you're right. Shep never talks like that. But he sure has the same voice."

"Oh Ret, you're old man boyfriend is fine, I'm sure." Irina replies.

"Shhh."

Shep is forced to step over half a dozen bodies by the time he reaches Nico. Nico points to a few doors, "There are three people in that room. They're human. One in the opposite room." He turns to face the stairs going down, "I think this floor is secure if you want to do a second sweep. But I don't feel comfortable walking down these wooden steps. I might hover or come in through the front door. What do you propose? I don't know this building as well as you."

Shep's spent most of the last eleven years trying to avoid the clinic. Too many memories of his recovery from demon night.

“Watch my back—and those stairs—while I make sure these rooms are clear first.”

Shep moves to the nearest door, keeping his guard up as he works down the hall. Each time he finds civilians inside, he lowers his voice through the external speakers just enough to carry: “Shelter in place. We’ll secure the rest of the building.”

He continues room to room with the same steady, controlled pace, hoping with every door he opens that he’ll spot the doctor. If he does, he plans to escort him straight to Corvus—after confirming the kid hasn’t turned.

“Watch my back—and those stairs—while I make sure these rooms are clear first.”

"Roger that," Nico stands at attention, watching the stairs and glancing back as Shep moves to the nearest door, keeping his guard up as he works down the hall.

Upon opening the first door, he finds Mary Ann, from the cafe, and an old man, whom Shep would assume is her husband. They are normal, not zombies. He lowers his voice through the external speakers just enough to carry: “Shelter in place. We’ll secure the rest of the building.” They both nod as the old man gives a thumbs up.

Within moments, the very last door needing checked is opened just before Shep reaches it. Doctor Anderson stands there, hands up, palms forward, and states, "We're not infected. Just frightened. Is this everywhere?"

Shep leads the doctor straight back to the room with Corvus. Upon opening the door, Irina and Ret are both holding various blunt weapons, ready for a fight. Corvus lies there, staring at the ceiling, in obvious discomfort. The doctor frowns, "He obviously has a concussion. I'll see to him." Irina and Ret relax.

Once Shep is out of Nico’s line of sight by stepping into the doorway of the room where Corvus lies, the Silver Eagle’s bulk filling the frame, he raises a gauntleted finger to where his lips would be—quiet—and drops his voice to a low, controlled murmur. “Name’s Lieutenant Colonel Daniels.”
He lets the name hang for half a beat—long enough to register, not long enough to invite questions. He pushes straight through any reaction without giving space for interruption.

“This floor and the roof are secure. There’s a girl up top—Nora. Stable when we left her, but she needs a medic now if she’s going to hold onto her humanity. Check her as soon as possible, but go in cautious. She’s fighting this thing hard, but if she’s slipped…” he grimaces, “Be ready.”

He shifts his stance, eyed helmet sweeping the room. “The Coalition lieutenant and I are will clear the rest of the building and then start working our way through the town. Town’s hit bad. If you’ve got a better plan for triage, speak up—but for now we’ll route the injured here. Listen carefully: anyone who dies will likely get back up. If you can’t save someone, you put them down clean. Destroying the brain works.”

He offers the Sheriff’s revolver to Ret, grip-first. “Two rounds. Make them count.”

With that, Shep carefully turns the heavy armor back into the hallway. His voice snaps back into mission mode as he moves into the hall. The Silver Eagle’s sensors sweep the stairwell, and he pauses at the top, calculating angles and stress load hoping that the Silver Eagle's VTOL mode might get him down without tearing the stairs apart. OOC: Next actions and his "commands" for Nico depend on what he thinks of the stairs.

Dr. Anderson nods, signifying that he understands. He looks over Corvus and grins, "Well, my boy. If anyone was going to beat this, it would be you!" Shep remembers when Corvus was just a young boy, barely starting to walk, surviving the night where his parents died. No one knew their name, so the town awarded him the surname; Night. The boy is a strange one, yet blended in with the other kids quite well.

Shep shifts his stance, eyed helmet sweeping the room. “The Coalition lieutenant and I are will clear the rest of the building and then start working our way through the town. Town’s hit bad. If you’ve got a better plan for triage, speak up — but for now we’ll route the injured here. Listen carefully: anyone who dies will likely get back up. If you can’t save someone, you put them down clean. Destroying the brain works.”

The doctor looks up, startled at what Shep had just said, "Kill them? That violates my hippocratic oath! We don't even know if there is a cure yet!"

"And in that time, the walking corpses will kill us before you find the cure!" Irina shouts. "Listen to the Colonel!"

Ret shushes Irina, staring with obvious recognition to Shep, and a million questions just waiting to burst out, but understands Shep's situation. Irina obviously hasn't caught on.

Shep offers the Sheriff’s revolver to Ret, grip-first. “Two rounds. Make them count.”

"Umm... Alright..." He replies, unsure of himself.

Nico is already at the bottom with another body at his feet, "If you go down sideways, it should keep from burning the walls or breaking any steps. Tight fit though." He walks out into the hallway at the bottom of the steps, looks both ways, then peeks back up the stairs, "All clear, so far. I can hear people down here on audio enhancers. Same sweep as before, sir?"

Nico can’t see it, but Shep raises an eyebrow at the lieutenant’s impetuousness. “Gonna get himself killed one of these days,” he mutters quietly to Carl. “Yeah—same as before,” he adds, his voice trailing off as he finishes, “...but wait for me to get down there.”

Hoping his piloting instincts come back a little faster than they did on the way down from the roof, he extends the Silver Eagle’s wings just enough for hover. He angles himself sideways as Nico suggested, gives himself a steadying breath, and eases off into the stairwell—carefully controlling thrust, doing everything he can not to burn the walls or snap a step on the way down.

He angles himself sideways as Nico suggested, gives himself a steadying breath, and eases off into the stairwell—carefully controlling thrust, doing everything he can not to burn the walls or snap a step on the way down. He accomplishes this with shaky results, but the only damage is to the handrails as they become scorched but not completely burnt.

OOC: Pilot check: 62 rolled.

Upon stepping into the hallway from the stairwell, Shep can faintly hear people worriedly talking amongst themselves behind closed doors.

"I did a scan, just people so far. Best to be sure." He steps partway into an open room to let Shep by. Nothing in that room, just a mess and a bit of blood on the floor near the door.

Moments later, the doctor calls from the top of the steps, "We need to get Nova into surgery ASAP! She has punctured lungs and a nasty skull fracture! Please hurry! We need the O.R."

Shep tries to drag the layout of the clinic up from memory. “You heard the man—let’s get this done.” His voice carries a note of resignation as he shifts the Silver Eagle’s weight forward, scanning the area. “If any of the creatures are in the O.R., we’re not fighting in there if we can avoid it. We lure them out into the open—last thing we need is to damage the equipment.”

Most of the other doors are open, but the operating room's door is closed. Upon opening it, Shep discovers two nurses hiding behind the supply cabinet. The younger blonde shouts, "Please don't eat us!" while squeezing her eyes tightly shut and flinching away.

Nico begins laughing, "No ma'am, we're the cavalry and we're clearing out the monsters. We'll have you safe in no time."

A quick sweep of the room reveals that the two nurses are the only two living things hiding in the room. Nico checks the hallways and a closet, not finding anything.

Meanwhile the other nurse sighs, "Who are you guys?"

Hoping the nurse doesn’t recognize his voice, Shep answers, “You’ll be safe here. I’m Lt. Colonel Daniels, and this is Lieutenant Nico. Prep for surgery while we finish clearing the building. The doctor will be bringing down a young girl with a fractured skull and broken ribs—she’s going to need immediate surgery if she’s going to make it.”

He pauses as he thinks for a moment. “You’ll want restraints… just in case she doesn’t survive the procedure and turns into… one of them.”

[OOC: Assuming Nico is already moving through the rest of the floor:]
Shep pulls the operating room door closed behind him and turns to continue the sweep. “Lieutenant—sit rep. Is this floor clear?”

OOC: Does this building have a basement?
