OOC: well, Brad's physical stats are only average for the most part, but he does have that high PE. At least he won't have to worry about getting tired halfway done. 8) So he'll try to focus less on speed and instead make sure he does the job right (making sure he has a good grip on ropes and such before pushing off, etc). Speed won't matter if he falls off part way through.

Brad gives a quick wave to Vi and Teddy as he heads to the starting line, unsure if they see him.

He smiles in response to Kendal deciding to try the course as well. while in line he'll do a few stretches to limber up. When it's his turn he'll pay the man and give it his best.

If Kendal's going first he'll wish her luck.

Brad gives a quick wave to Vi and Teddy as he heads to the starting line, unsure if they see him. Teddy waves back, shouting, "Get to stage two, Brad!"

He smiles in response to Kendal deciding to try the course as well. While in line, he does a few stretches to limber up. He wishes Kendal luck as she climbs the steps to the beginning of stage one. The announcer calls out, "Up next, we have Kendal Jacobs! Fort Hammer's own beauty queen!" Kendal laughs as she embarrassedly cups her hands over her mouth.

Her stage starts! She takes off running for the quintuple step, easily breezing through it. She then grapples onto 'rolling thunder' and kicks off. She is unshaken as she rides the rolling log all the way down and across. She climbs off and steps onto the platform for the rope swing. She swings out but her foot misses the opposite platform. She tries swinging back and forth to get back to either platform, only to get tired and fall.

She tries her second attempt as Larry gets the crowd excited again. She runs out, visibly exhausted and attempts the quintuple step, making it look incredibly simple. She rolls down the log like she did before. She reaches her nemesis, the rope swing. She grips the rope tightly, looks down at Brad and winks as she pushes off. She reaches her leg out and lands squarely on the opposite platform. She looks down at the ramp looping up into the warped wall. She takes a deep breath and runs fast and hard until she is running up the wall and leaps up and back, grabbing the ledge and pulling herself slowly up.

She takes a few moments to catch her breath as she stares out over the spinning balance log. Without warning, she sprints and begins running across, only to slip and fall, catching the opposite platform and pulling herself up. She's made it further than most competitors at this point. She pats her chest, feeling the adrenaline.

She looks down at the mini trampoline into the spider climb. She drops down, bounces up high and nearly falls off of the obstacle, but braces herself tightly inside. She slowly scoots along the parallel walls and makes it to the zipline. Many have mentioned that it's a very awkward jump, which ends in letting go and trying to grab a cargo net. She jumps for the zipline, her hand whiffs past the handles as she plummets to the safety mat below.

Brad finds himself going through strategies as he climbs the steps. He didn't have to pay because Kendal already did. Kendal walks out into the open to watch him from the side, which is the best view. She waves.

Larry, the course's stage presence, calls out, "Up next, we have Brad Greenwood. The town's medical child prodigy! Let's give it up for Brad!"

Brad takes off for the quintuple step; taking it slow, steady and safe to the opposite ledge. He tightly grabs onto the rolling log. It begins rolling before he's ready. It's first surprise drop nearly slips his grip, but he maintains a hugging tactic which nearly slips again. He ends up using a cramp inducing grip that holds until he makes it to the other side. He climbs up and sees the simple rope swing. He swings out, but misses the opposite platform and is forced to swing back and forth until he reaches the starting platform and climbs back on.

Brad needs a moment to rest, then grabs the rope again. He swings out but feels a searing pain on his thumb. Instinctively, he lets go and falls to the safety mat. Upon examining his thumb, the corpse of a smashed bee, with its stinger still in his thumb, is stuck there. Foiled by a bee...

OOC: Rolled a crit fumble there. But since it was a N20, it qualifies for bonus exp.

Brad makes his second attempt at the obstacle course. He moves a little faster across the quintuple steps, reaching 'rolling thunder.' Here he grabs on, hoping his aching and slowly swelling thumb won't be a problem. He makes it across and climbs up to try the rope swing again, carefully checking for any stinging or biting insects. He finds none. He swings across and gracefully steps onto the opposite platform.

Brad now looks down at the ramp looping into the warped wall. This one usually gets most people. He knows he needs to be fast and strong. He runs hard and fast and leaps up. Only to miss and need to try again. He climbs to the top of the ramp and tries again. He makes it high enough and grasps the ledge, but his bee stung thumb makes it hard to fully grip without slipping. He tries five more times before he finally is able to pull himself up. He looks the time. He only has about seventy-five seconds left.

He tries to run across the spinning balance log, slips and falls, much like Kendal did, finding himself climbing rapidly from below to keep hold. He pulls himself up. It took longer than he wanted. Only forty-five seconds left.

He drops down to the spider jump and climb. He makes it looks easy as he makes it to exactly where Kendal was at. The jump to the zipline and slide into the cargo net. He jumps and catches the zipline, it snaps at the end, allowing him to use the momentum and leap towards the cargo net. He's just inches short as he plummets to the safety mat. He was only one obstacle from finishing.

Kendal runs over and hugs him, "We both did really well! Wanna try again?" Brad can hear Larry announcing for stage two competitors to get ready.

OOC: If interested in watching the stage two runs, then proceed to post in Deadmans Hand - Obstacle course - Stage 2. If not, then just reply to this thread.

Brad hugs her back. "I'd like to try again, but with this", Brad holds up his stung hand so she can see his swollen thumb, "I have trouble with my grip."

With a sardonic smirk he shakes his head. "Done in by a bee of all things. If you want to try again though, I'll cover you this time," he says with a smile.
If she opts not to, they can go over and cheer on Teddy in the second stage. Either way, once he stops somewhere, he'll pull some tweezers out of his medkit and make sure he doesn't have any of the stinger still in his thumb.

They both notice Frank, Teddy, Dusty and Steve compete on stage two. Frank fails his first time. Dusty easily breezes through the course. Teddy and Steve, in all of the crowd's excitement, fail. Frank completes stage two on his second try. Teddy and Steve both fail, on their second attempts, at the most unexpected spots. Frank, Dusty, someone named Tila and someone named Cory all make it to stage three. That's four times more than a normal year.

OOC: See obstacle course stage 2 thread, located in past posts, for more information. Frank's run was actually quite epic.

Kendal graciously accepts Brad's credit and heads up the steps onto the platform. Larry has just returned, likely after a short restroom break and a drink. The announcer smiles at Kendal as she reaches the starting platform. "Kendal! With the most beautiful smile!" The crowd seems less interested in watching, considering the excitement of watching stage two competitors perform, even though Kendal did quite well.

She seems genuinely flattered and happy with the compliments as the light turns green, surprising her. She takes off running for the quintuple steps, but she's in such a hurry that she misses the second step and plummets to the safety mat. Embarrassed, she ascends the steps again... for her second try.

Brad can see how mortified that she's become as she refuses to make eye contact with anyone. Larry even refrains from any comment as the light turns green. Kendal is ready this time. She cautiously jogs towards the same obstacle as she carefully navigates the steps until she reaches 'Rolling Thunder.'

She grips the log with her arms and legs and lets it roll down. She reaches the platform on the far side and cautiously dismounts. She grabs onto the rope swing and launches, but not hard enough. She's forced to land back on the starting pad. She swings out again, landing her foot firmly on the opposite platform, but doesn't notice that the rope wrapped around her ankle as she attempts to run down the ramp for the warped wall. Instead, she trips on the rope and faceplants halfway down.

From Brad's point of view, at the very least, she'll need a bandage. As she stands up, he notices that her cheek and shoulder are badly scraped, but she doesn't give up. She makes another run at the warped wall and misses. Her third try is much better as she has fast start and leaps up, catching the ledge and pulling herself over.

She doesn't hesitate as she runs across the rotating balance log and drops down for the spider jump. She bounces back up, catching herself inside of the walls and begins hopping along, making it to the end where she must jump to the zipline and swing into a cargo net. Instead, she leaps out, her foot slips as she reaches out for the handlebars of the zipline. She overreaches while the grips catch her shirt, literally ripping it off, exposing her bra and leaving her shirt hanging from the obstacle like a flag. She lands into the safety mat with an audible whack.

"Ummm... uh oh," is all Larry can say.

Brad cheers encouragement to her for her abortive first run and through the second. Seeing some of her bad luck he thinks to himself, 'wow, has the first course gotten cursed in the last little while? That is some bad luck.'

when she falls from the zipline, Brad hurries over to her, taking off his jacket (or shirt if he's not wearing a jacket) to let her cover up.

Kendal, half in tears, half laughing, covers up. Her face is badly scraped and bleeding and she may have a fat lip. She hugs Brad, "Okay, I think I've had enough of that." She glances back at the course as another competitor does a comical somersault off of the rope swing. He isn't sure if the guy did it on purpose or if it was truly a failed swing.

Someone announces over a bullhorn, "Cooking competition signups are starting!" While at the same time, another bullhorn erupts with, "Steeplechase racers, please report in within thirty minutes!"

As the announcements blare, Brad asks Kendal, "Want to check out the second part of the course? Or maybe go watch something else?"

Brad also tries to recall when the poker tournament was supposed to be held, as he cleans and band-aids the scrapes she's picked up.

As the announcements blare, Brad asks Kendal, "Want to check out the second part of the course? Or maybe go watch something else?"

"Something else," she smirks as Brad also tries to recall when the poker tournament was supposed to be held, as he cleans and band-aids the scrapes she's picked up. Kendal eventually answers with, "Not for about five hours. Are you getting anxious?"

The first aid is rather easy as she almost looks as though she has no injury once Brad's completed treating her. By this time, the steeplechase and cooking competitions have completed. Megana took second in the steeplechase. Frank, Johnny and some new kid are at the obstacle course. The new kid easily completes stage one.

He also sees Vi outside of one of the outhouses, trying to get someone's attention. He then notices a hauler transport vehicle entering town from the west end, trying to stay out of sight. A large canvas tarp covers something large on the flatbed. Sheriff's deputies seem to be driving it. Near the justice center, Sheriff Ericson is hauling away one of the horse racers, handcuffed.

Kendal taps him on the shoulder, "We could go get pictures in the photo booth."

"A little, none of us got a whole lot of practice in, but it should be fun." And speaking of fun, yeah, I'm up for some pictures. " he says with a smile.

She leads him to the photobooth as she pops some credits in. The two take some pictures.

Afterwards, she takes his hand, "Thank you for spending time with me. No one seems genuine anymore."

Brad notices that a kid named Marshal just easily completed stage one of the obstacle course.
