Re: Re: Rifts Dead Man's Hand - Festival Day - Dane
“Great idea!” When their turn comes, Dane orders two teriyaki chicken, one lemon pepper chicken, one honey ham, and one steak skewer with rice, plus two waters. He grins as he pays. “I couldn’t decide what sounded best, so I figured we’d try them all.” He pays the five credits, with the food in hand, he leads the way toward a spot where they can sit and eat, scanning for an open table or a bit of shade away from the thickest part of the crowd.
Eventually, the two find a nice spot on the far side of the obstacle course with soft, grassy, dry ground. The savory and well seasoned teriyaki sticks are delicious. The water is a necessity as the rice can get stuck in his throat. Meg seems to enjoy hers as well.
Off to the side, about fifty yards away, a crowd begins to gather to compete in the greased pole climb. Meg nods towards it, "Are you good at climbing? I hear that top prize is one thousand credits this year. There's also the greased pig run and after that should be the horse races, which we can bet on." She counts through her credits and nods, grinning to herself.

"I'm okay at climbing," Dane admits with a small grin. "But I’ve never tried it on a greased pole before." He glances toward the contest. "Honestly, I don’t usually spend much time at the fair. Never really had a reason to… until now. It always reminded me of my mom." He shrugs lightly, looking back to Meg. "Think I should give it a shot—see how badly I can embarrass myself?"

"Well, your clothes will be ruined if you do climb it, maybe the money is worth it... if you get any." She pauses, in thought, then seems to work up the courage to continue, "I think I remember what happened... to your mom. I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. She was an amazing marksman. I heard that your dad taught her how to shoot." She thinks for a moment, "Reminds me of my mom and dad sometimes." She lets the words stick for a moment before she stands up," Should we hurry to my place and find my old painting clothes for you to try the climb and chase a pig? And we'll need to buy some gasoline after to get the grease off easier."

OOC: Unless Dane has any old clothes that might fit him better, he'll take Meg up on her offer. Also, faster forwarding through the eating phase a little. I could go into great detail about how he almost stabs himself in the eye with a skewer or something.
He feels a flutter in his stomach at the thought of going back to Meg’s place. It feels strangely personal—like getting another peek into a part of her life that most people didn’t get to see. Last time they’d been there, everything had happened so fast he hadn’t really stopped to think about it.
Finishing off the last of the ham, he wipes a bit of juice from his chin. “Yeah, that’s probably a good idea. Dad would skin me if I ruined a set of clothes.” oO Although, Oo he thinks, oO Dad might just be glad I’m actually out doing something this year instead of hiding behind a book or a computer screen. Oo
He grins, standing and offering her a hand up. “How about I start with the pole climb and we’ll see about the pig after.” Tossing their trash in a nearby bin, he falls into step beside her, heading down the street.

Upon reaching her house, she rushes into her room and digs through an old trunk and pulls out several sets of painting clothes and tosses them to Dane. The best clothes that he can find are a pair of eggshell paint splattered jeans that show his ankles and a t-shirt that's so faded that he can't tell what was originally on it.
They rush back to see Frank almost reach the ten credit coupon but slide down just short. Lord Stein has been picking who goes and in what order. He picks Johnny next, who makes a valiant attempt by running from the edge of the crowd and jumping to try and get as high as he can on the pole. He grips the pole, manages not to slide and grasps the ten credit coupon he tries for the 15 credit slip and slips down.
Another person from the crowd decides to climb the pole, with nice clothes, only to regret it as he only makes it to where the five credit coupon would have been. Several other people attempt and fail. Then a young girl climbs the pole and grabs the fifteen credit coupon. Dane feels like this is going to be much more difficult as the girl almost reaches the twenty credit coupon but falls, landing with a hard thud and, "ooof!"
Lord Stein then picks Dane.
OOC: Any tactics or ideas?

Re: Re: Rifts Dead Man's Hand - Festival Day - Dane
Dane studies the greased pole for a long moment, arms crossed, lips pressed in a doubtful line. He circles it once, taking in the shine, the angle, and the mess at its base. After a short sigh, he wipes his hands on the jeans and kicks off his shoes, deciding bare feet might give him a better chance.
“Alright,” he mutters, “low and slow.”
He presses in close, wrapping his arms and legs around the pole rather than just grabbing at it. He tests the surface, shifts his grip, and looks up toward the top as if measuring the distance. His plan is simple—move a few inches at a time, keep his balance, and rely on his legs more than his hands. He tucks his chin, takes a breath, and starts to climb.
OOC: Strategy is small, calculated, methodical movements. No sudden lunges. He tries to get as much surface are of legs, body, arms and hands against the pole as possible to attempt to increase friction and reduce muscle fatigue. As needed, he'll wipe grease from his hands onto the pants to try to get better grip. Perhaps a perception role to try to determine where a little more speed might be okay based on the amount of grease.
“Alright,” he mutters, “low and slow.”

Dane's measured movements are working, until he reaches gets about four and a half feet off of the ground. The grease is thicker up here, causing him to slide down a few feet, but not touch the ground, which would disqualify him. He slowly makes his way back up with an idea; wipe the grease off with one hand and wipe it onto the butt of the jeans. Upon reaching his original spot, he secures himself, reaches up with one hand to remove grease only to miscalculate his movements and begin sliding down again. He's unable to stop the downward momentum as his feet touch the ground.
As usual, the crowd erupts into feigned disappointment, "Awww." Meaning, they have more chances to try. Dane overhears someone state that it's only a credit to try again.

Re: Re: Rifts Dead Man's Hand - Festival Day - Dane
With his new knowledge in hand, Dane will try again once his muscles have a chance to rest and he has a chance to clean some of the grease off. Same strategy as before. "I think this can work." he says to Meg when he rejoins her. "I'm going to try one more time." OOC: As long as he has enough time try and still get over to the horserace for Meg to place a bet. He might put a couple of credits down as well.
Re: Re: Rifts Dead Man's Hand - Festival Day - Dane
OOC: just waiting on Frank to try his second attempt. Is Dane going to pay the 1 credit to try again?

OOC: Yes, as long as there's time to do that and still bet on the horse races.
