Rifts Dead Man's Hand - Bottoms Up
Re: Rifts Dead Man's Hand - Bottoms Up
Dane’s mind runs a quick, useless analysis on what Meg holding his hand might mean. One moment she’s firmly in the friend zone, the next she’s acting like there could be something more. He leaves his hand where it is, curious to see how this plays out.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he says at last. “Just more comfortable in front of a computer screen than in a crowd, and I wanted to stay out of whatever that argument was about. Figured it was the best way to keep my pretty face from getting messed up.” He keeps his expression flat, aiming for deadpan, but there’s a faint spark in his eyes that gives him away.
His complexion is uneven from a few intense weeks in a computer cybernetics workshop, with a faint burn scar trailing from chin to cheek—a reminder of lessons learned the hard way. No one would call him handsome, but he wears the marks with quiet confidence.
Meg glances toward the sheriff, then to Teddy and Vi, before returning her gaze to him. “What would you like to eat?”
After a brief pause for thought, Dane says, “I think I’ll just have a burger—keep it simple. How about you?”
Dane looks up and winces as Ted makes for the door. .oO If Ted wasn't my enemy before, I'm sure he is now. Oo. The part of him enjoying the feel of Miss Hoffman's touch wars with the part that fears what might come later if Ted ever gets him alone.

OOC: sorry for the wait

As Teddy leaves, Brad feels like the situation has defused, at least for the time being. For a moment there, he was worried he'd need to borrow the bar's first aid kit. The problem of course being that Teddy tends to hold grudges, so problems can reappear when you least expect them.
He rubs the bridge of his nose a bit in frustration before taking another bite of his burger. Watching Kendal chase after him reminded Brad of something he'd seen in Smith Falls with his dad once, a fragment of song lyrics that supposedly dated back to Old World according to the owner, a collector who had various old papers and things displayed behind glass cases.
The lyrics went 'You love he, but she loves him. and he loves somebody else, you just can't win.'
Was he attracted to Kendal? Sure, she's good looking and he's a teenage boy, his stupid hormones have him attracted to pretty much every girl in town.
But he also got tongue-tied whenever he tried to talk to any of them in a 'romantic' way.
"Well, as far as the boxing match goes, I'll be there. I'm scheduled as the on-site medic," he ends with a smirk. "I am rooting for you though Vi, Teddy's ego could use a little deflating."

Vi finishes her food and smiles at Brad, " yeah, your right, his ego does need to be taken down a peg or 6. "
She looks around at the group as a whole and sees Kendall and Teddy walk outside.
" let's hope captain dumbass can stay outta trouble long enough to have our fight tomorrow ", with that vi sits back in the chair with a smirk on her face.

OOC: I hit rewind slightly to include posts that were in response to past actions.
Miss Hoffman notices Dane enter the saloon as she absent mindedly slides her hair behind her ear. She walks over to his table and sits down, whispering, "Are you okay?" She reaches across the table lightly holding his hand. "I never asked you if you can handle crowds. It took me a while to get used to them."

Johnny snorts while glancing between Dane and Frank.
Dane's complexion is uneven from a few intense weeks in a computer cybernetics workshop, with a faint burn scar trailing from chin to cheek—a reminder of lessons learned the hard way. No one would call him handsome, but he wears the marks with quiet confidence.
She glances back towards the sheriff, then to Teddy and Vi, then back to Dane, "What would you like to eat?"
Megana, now awkwardly standing next to Frank, just shrugs and walks over and sits with Ted. Kendal scoffs, "Are we not cool enough for you guys? Come on, Meg. Let's scoot our tables together." She begins to stand up, gesturing for Ted and Megana to do the same.
Frank's mom seems to relax. The sheriff and his friend sit back down at the bar, glancing back occasionally. Johnny is focused on drawing faces with tomato sauce and french fries across his nearly empty plate.
Then there's Teddy, who's begun watching Dane and Miss Hoffman. His blank, pale expression speaks volumes as he stands up and walks silently outside. Kendal chases after him as he slams the wooden door. Johnny looks at Vi, asking, "Should I make sure they're okay?"

She observes the group as Teddy and Kendal exit, "Let's hope captain dumbass can stay outta trouble long enough to have our fight tomorrow." With that, Vi sits back in the chair, smirking.
"Vi! Why?" Johnny vents. "Coach told you NOT to egg him on."
The sheriff turns his head, "Attitudes like that are likely to get you into a fight that you can't win." He spins his seat, "I want to see a respectful match tomorrow. Not two dumb kids trying to pull each others' hair out." Frank's mom stands, nodding in agreement.
The front saloon door bursts open again. In walks Marty, Ted's dad. "What's going on here? Was my boy kicked out of here? Again?" He's got a middle aged body, salt and pepper beard and an old baseball cap on. He's a larger guy, confident and usually not one for taking no for an answer.
"Marty, no one kicked him out. He was emotional before he walked in here, as usual," the sheriff announces.
"Oh bullshit, Eric." Marty walks past the kids over to the sheriff. He seems to pause for a split second to nod at Miss Hoffman. She averts eye contact and looks at Dane, embarrassed to even know the man. "You guys have been hasseling him since his mother disappeared."
The sheriff sets his burger down and stands up, "Is there a problem, here?" He takes on a challenging posture, "Now I see where the boy gets it. Every fighter, in the history of the festivals, talks trash on their opponent. This is no different. Ted just... didn't like it and left."
Marty sighs and then seems to have a realization, then pivots on his heel and looks at Vi, "Was it you? You think you can handle Teddy? He's going to be a regional champion, beyond this tiny district." As he gazes into Vi's eyes, Vi can see that this man is full of wind and anger, yet, his eyes have seen war and death. Those aren't normal scars across his face and neck. Marty's scarred knuckles show that Coach Driver isn't Ted's only coach. Even the sheriff, for once, maintains a ready posture in front of Marty.

Vi shows no fear and stands up meeting Marty's gaze as he boasts about his son, " Look Marty, right now teddy let his emotions get the better of him like the sheriff has already told you. As for the fight tomorrow, we both are undefeated. so seriously shut it. "
Vi cracks her knuckles and prepares are a fight.

Frank turns around in his chair and watches as Marty gets closer to Vi. "The only one that was picking on Teddy was me. I don't think he liked that I said I was going to root against him." He shrugs and continues, "Plus he wasn't feeling the best when we first got here to begin with." Then switching the French quietly says his mom "Je pense que quelqu'un s'est réveillé du mauvais côté du lit" (I think someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed) Switching back to English, "Can I also get a burger as well mom and soda."

Yet, Marty walks by simply stating, "I wouldn't, Violet," as he walks by.
The sheriff never even turns around. He just looks at Angela. "Don't make me intervene," he says, seemingly to either or neither.
Frank turns around in his chair and watches as Marty passes Vi. "The only one that was picking on Teddy was me. I don't think he liked that I said I was going to root against him." He shrugs and continues as Mr. Swenson pauses to hear him out, "Plus he wasn't feeling the best when we first got here to begin with." Then switching the French quietly says his mom "Je pense que quelqu'un s'est réveillé du mauvais côté du lit" (I think someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed) Switching back to English, "Can I also get a burger as well, mom, and soda."
Frank's mom ominously answers, "Sure thing, Francis," and frowns as she lays several more burgers on the grill. The sizzling and the smell spreads through the saloon, along with some bacon. She then fills a glass with soda and a few cubes of ice.
Marty gives an amused chuckle as he continues for the door, "Vous devriez vraiment apprendre à faire preuve de courtoisie envers vos aînés. Passer au français peut être une façon astucieuse de lancer des insultes, mais gardez à l'esprit que certains d'entre nous le connaissent peut-être aussi." he quips as he walks outside. The sheriff's shoulders bounce with stifled laughter.

Megana watches the tension seemingly rising on the situation but remains silent....observing and ready....
François
Frank looks at Marty with a look of shock and amusement before saying in French, "Hey old man, what else can you do that you're not telling people." After pondering whether or not Teddy can speak French if Marty can continues. "You see if you were a bit smarter you wouldn't have told me that you understood me over a coment so mild." Smililng with way more confidence than he should have, "Now I know you know what I'm saying.....mightve been more beneficial to play that card at a later date...." Switching back to English, "I suppose now you'll have to check my expression from now on to see if I'm just messing with you, or if I'm just saying it because I know you're listening. Sounds like it'll be fun to me but extra stress on you old man."

Dane doesn't understand the words, but the tone doesn't sound good. He tries to be small and invisible and hopes it just blows over. .oO Can't we just enjoy a peaceful lunch? Oo.
