Shep dodges a rough spot on the trail and looks over at the officer and gives him a single nod. The interceptor speeds ahead of Jack and Shep, leaving the twin dust trails behind it, which quickly become a single plume trail, hovering in the air.

OOC: Looks like Bill isn't really playing, unfortunately.

Jack nods as he seems to have a determined look to him. To Shep, that means something serious is going through Jack's mind, as opposed to his calm demeanor. The interceptor disappears into town, up ahead. There is a building or two ablaze in the town. What happened? How did a few man eating fish do this? It seems like an eternity of driving as the get to within a mile of the town. Shep swears he hears the telltale crack of a firearm from within town.

As they approach town, Shep slows down and signals Jack to do likewise. "Keep your eyes open." He yells over the rushing wind and the sound of the engines. "Something doesn't feel right." He maintains the slower speed as they approach town and reaches with his off hand down to the pocket with the gun to make sure it's still where he left it. His life here was supposed to be simple. .oO Why can't they just leave me alone? Oo. The nightmares had finally started to become manageable, but after today....

Shep looks back over at Jack and notices his serious look. .oO I may not be the only one with nightmares Oo. He makes a mental note to check in with him when the proverbial dust settles a little bit.

Nearing town, Shep slows down, signalling Jack to do likewise. "Keep your eyes open." He yells over the rushing wind and engines. "Something doesn't feel right." He maintains the slower speed and reaches with his off hand down to the pocket with the gun to make sure it's still there. To his relief, it is.

Shep and Jack, being a mere quarter mile from the edge of town, carefully observe the situation. They spot the interceptor's dust trails, tearing through the town, rising above the buildings. Gunshots echo through the air. Screams and panic seem to be the general atmosphere.

"Someone! Help!" A female voice clearly screams.

A building fire, on the west end of town; the orphanage, where Corvus, Nova and several others are living, has nearly consumed the entire structure.

"That sounded like Rena." Jack states, delivering Shep a questioning glance, attempting to extract what the best course of action is. Shep's experience vastly outweighs Jack's, even if Shep chooses to forget. Shep feels the pressure of making the right choice. Visions of blood, giant hands crushing someone like a rotten apple, and a crescent blood moon overwhelm his thoughts. He can't tell the difference between the screams from his past with the screams from town. His heart races with adrenaline as his throat closes close to hold down bile. He suppresses his gag reflex, heaving slightly. If he can't get a grip on himself, then he may succumb to anxiety. The last time, he ran.

Shep struggles internally. His instincts say to proceed with caution until they know more, but the adrenaline fueled part of his brain says to rush headlong into the fray and save Rena. Finally he decides on a compromise. "We need to hurry, but carefully." he yells over the noise of the wind rushing past. "Something's gone bad and maybe Rena's in trouble. Follow me and stay close." Shep accelerates again trying to maintain a balance of caution and speed. "Damn, damn, damn..." he mutters under his breath as he drives.

With Jack closely behind, the duo enters the first empty street. Upon the second block, they spy the burning orphanage to their right. There's no saving that inferno. To the left lies market street. Market street contains the library, corner store, farmers square, tool shops and clinic/pharmacy.
Right in the middle of the street, in front of the library and corner store, is the police interceptor. Its back tire has a smear of brownish red paste that leads to a head that's been smashed like a pumpkin. The blonde officer has Ryan over his shoulder, Ryan has quite a bit of blood on his face and chin. Irina is with them. Someone is behind the interceptor and looks to be fighting someone else, who's out of view. The dark haired driver seems to have a white knuckled grip on the steering wheel.

Jack shouts, "What the hell?" confusedly, obviously unable to piece together the current events.

[OOC: Sorry for the delay.]
Shep fires a little more fuel into the engine and pulls out in front of Jack. He heads straight for the fight in progress. He squints through the wind in his eyes and attempts to try to get a better view of who's fighting whom. Not likely the fish, this time. Not this far from the river, anyway. As soon as he gets a better view of things he'll assess the options and decide what to do next.

Shep guns the ATV past Jack. oO(Not likely the fish, this time. Not this far from the river, anyway)Oo The interceptor tears away, spitting up gravel, with Irina and the raven haired cop inside. Irina has a horrified expression while peering down at Ryan, who's on her lap. The interceptor had run over someone's head! Some of the gravel is covered in the unfortunately individual's skull fragments and brain matter. The blonde policeman stayed behind and joins the fight. Shep skids, stopping in front of Jack.

Shep, now with Jack beside him, squint through the interceptor's dust trail. Donnie, a burly member of the community, has just laid Reggie out with a solid punch. Reggie's homemade sword lays beside him as he is prone, on his elbows, blood spraying from his nose, pooling up on the back of his hands. He seems to choke and spit up more blood while attempting a glance at the cop fighting Donnie. Reggie passes out, blood still pouring from his face.

The blonde cop dove on Donnie while Reggie went down. He skillfully pins Donnie down, then grabs him by the hair and proceeds to repetitively bash Donnie's head into the gravel. By the time Shep or Jack can react, Donnie's head is producing a dull, wet, smacking sound against the loose gravel.

Meanwhile, Gail Mitchel, a rather pleasant member of the community, approaches Donnie, the cop, Shep and Jack. She sports a purplish, black bruise around her neck. Her head seems to rest on her left shoulder as her yellow, lifeless gaze eerily falls on Shep..
